The Assembleia Figueirense is a non-profit organization established on December 15, 1839, and recognized as a Public Utility Institution on December 18, 1986.
Throughout its long and rich history, Assembleia Figueirense has positioned itself as a cultural association, promoting numerous activities not only outside its premises but primarily within its headquarters. Moreover, by allowing other associations to use its space, the need to maximize its utilization became apparent.
The building targeted for intervention holds significant historical value in the city of Figueira da Foz, not only due to its location in the city’s historic center but also because it is part of a block with unique and well-defined characteristics. It is immediately adjacent to the City Hall building (Paços do Concelho).
Built in the last quarter of the 19th century, the building is architecturally iconic in the city. Thus, any intervention must prioritize preserving its identity and its relationship with the surrounding environment.
The need to expand is compounded by a pronounced separation (on the first floor) from the City Hall building, where there is a terrace/roof area. Its potential use is deemed crucial for the organization’s functioning.
It was proposed to “enclose” the existing terrace with a minimalist intervention that respects both the building itself and its immediate surroundings, including the City Hall building, Fernandes Thomaz Street, the opposite block, Saraiva de Carvalho Avenue, and the river.
The new façade was proposed to consist of a large glass pane (facing both streets), aligning with the vision of the promoter and project designer. The reflection created by this design will blend the new structure into the surroundings, minimizing any potential visual impact.
The roof consists of a flat plane, further ensuring that there is no adverse visual impact.
