Feng House
Vancouver / Canada / 2022
A family — including two daughters and a cat (one of the daughters studies architecture). They are Chinese-Canadian, originally from China’s Hangzhou province.
A Design Influenced by the Natural Surroundings
- Comfortable, cozy, warm and bright, the home features floor-to-ceiling windows that maximize natural light.
Outside, a large gable extends over the main level, forming a cantilevered cover for the recessed entry patio..
- Vancouver’s constant showers influenced the build in obvious ways, including the standing seam metal cladding that wraps around the home to provide protection from the rain and sun.
- The front and back of the home feature naturally stained cedar siding reminiscent of the surrounding natural environment.
- Large sliding glass doors at the rear of the house open to create one expansive and interconnected space consisting of the living, dining, kitchen and patio.
A Design Inspired by Two Cultures
- “By reintroducing memories from the past into the present, the house combines West Coast modern architecture with traditional Chinese design details in a personalized way that elevates the owners’ daily comfort and experience,” Jerry Liu says. “As cultures influence each other, different architectural styles merge, creating new ideas and trends of modern living.”
- The family’s Asian heritage is honored throughout the spaces:
In the entryway, slatted wood panels showcase a custom artwork — a topographic sculpture of Hangzhou.
The wood slatted walls that help to separate the spaces facilitate the natural flow of light,
a nod to the traditional Chinese “ping feng,” or room divider.
It creates a calming backdrop for the entry area, tea table and the dining table.
Furniture and décor pieces were also sourced directly from China which, according to the designers, bring “a unique sense of cultural elegance to the space.”
