Full renovation of apartment in General Mitre Barcelona / Spain / 2024
The project aimed to maximize the use of the available space by providing as much light and ventilation as possible, given that it was a ground-floor unit. The original dwelling had an elongated and open layout, with natural lighting relying exclusively on two courtyards located at either end. The main challenge of the project was to achieve natural light and ventilation in the three bedrooms requested by the client, without missing the opportunity to create a large, open-plan living-dining-kitchen area.
For this reason, the initial idea was to extend the terrace space by setting the interior façade back, allowing for the maximum use of the glazed façade for the living-dining-kitchen area and, at the same time, positioning one bedroom to benefit from natural light and ventilation. This approach made it possible to design three bedrooms with natural light, overcoming the limitations imposed by the interior courtyard façade line.
The resulting design created a spacious open area that integrates the living room, dining room, and kitchen, characterized by its flexibility, brightness, and the original masonry porticos, which were restored to bring identity and serve as a striking backdrop to this flexible and inviting space.
The geometry of the space also influenced the proposal, orienting the daytime areas toward the terrace.
The wet areas were strategically relocated to the center of the home, while the two main bedrooms were positioned at the opposite end of the living areas, taking advantage of the interior patio to ensure privacy and functionality.
Material choices were guided by a desire to create a harmonious and neutral aesthetic. Exposed metal structural elements were combined with warm wood finishes and seamless microcement flooring, which extends into the outdoor spaces, creating a cohesive indoor-outdoor connection. This also unifies spaces, allowing more light in, which is the main target for the project.
The completed renovation delivers a home defined by spaciousness, abundant natural light, and a modern aesthetic. Subtle industrial elements further enhance its unique and contemporary character.
