Courtyard 35 | WAY Studio
Beijing / China / 2023
Traditional Quadrangleis are defined by the edges of their roofs and surrounding walls, creating a richly layered perspective. Although this visual arrangement is deeply ingrained in our memory, we believe the time is ripe for exploring innovation. We have introduced corridors to divide the space into two distinct levels. At the ground level, the traditional eaves have been replaced by continuous, flowing curves, which not only preserve the atmosphere of the traditional space but also reshape the siheyuan skyline, creating a dialogue between traditional architecture and contemporary artistic techniques. The space beneath the corridors has become a favored shelter from the elements, fostering public interaction.
Above the corridors, the spatial experience breaks from traditional scale relationships between people and buildings, transforming the roof into an “island” where people can traverse and engage with the space. This design provides a novel way to experience traditional architecture, revitalizing it with new vitality.
