New Degree Architecture design studio ™ Completes Innovative Interior for the Medical Apparel Brand HIRCOST Saint Petersburg / Russian Federation / 2024
NDA design studio™ has completed a new project for the medical apparel brand HIRCOST. This project represents a blend of the philosophies of the studio and the brand, aimed not only at creating a comfortable and stylish space for customers but also at providing a new experience when visiting the HIRCOST store. In this project, the studio sought to reflect the philosophy of HIRCOST, which is expressed in their slogan "Shine for others, but don't burn out." This slogan reflects the challenging work of medical professionals and the brand's effort to support their morale. NDA design studio™ applied its expertise in deconstructing the brand's DNA and implemented unconventional solutions in space planning.
The store entrance features a long corridor with a stainless steel medical sink and a large mirror, on which the brand's slogan "Shine for others, but don't burn out" is written. The sink is a decorative element, with artificial grass laid inside. This corridor is a reference to real clinic areas that staff pass through before entering the operating room. After passing through the corridor, we enter the flagship store space, which completely redefines the traditional perception of a medical apparel brand's interior.
The HIRCOST store interior was inspired by the idea of reassembling a classic medical interior, combining materials like tiles, stainless steel, and white walls. We used a combination of white walls, white tiles, concrete, glass blocks, and aluminum composite sheets with a stainless steel finish to create a space that is both familiar to medical professionals and modern, reflecting current trends. Special attention was given to zoning: the irregular shape of the space served as a reference point for planning decisions — the fitting rooms are arranged within a block positioned diagonally to the center of the retail area. The fitting room sections are constructed from stainless steel, separated by white fabric and curtains made from the modern, high-quality material "Blazar." TPU — a water-repellent and windproof material, flexible and pleasant to the touch. It features a water and steel effect with an incredible shifting color across the entire fabric. The material is recyclable, safe for both humans and the environment. The outer side of the fitting room block is finished with tiles. Along the outer side is the cash register area, represented by a real surgical table with a surgical lamp. Behind the "cash desk" is a wall made of glass blocks.
The retail area is a large space with a wall clad in corrugated sheets, along which is a long stainless steel rail with a shelf. Opposite this wall is the "Scalpel" installation — a trapezoidal wall made of aluminum composite panels with a stainless steel finish. This installation seems to slice through the store space, separating the customer area for communication and waiting, where branded graphite-colored metal benches with the HIRCOST logo are placed. One side of the installation features a clothing rail, while the other side contains the waiting area.
The store is located on the ground floor and has a series of windows that, when exposed to sunlight, create pleasant reflections, filling the cold medical aesthetic with warmth. Along the windows facing the entrance to the neighboring business center, a long clothing rail was also installed. To block the view of the business center, transparent curtains made from "Blazar" material were hung, allowing light to pass through and emphasizing the fabric's texture and the moire effect on the folds.
To visually increase the height and conceal the rough texture of the concrete ceiling, the ceiling was painted black. All newly constructed walls, including the "Scalpel" installation and the fitting room block, were built below the ceiling height, creating space between the walls and ceiling and allowing the customers' eyes to move freely without being constrained by the walls.
One of the main challenges was creating an interior that would reflect the uniqueness of the HIRCOST brand while also meeting high ergonomic and functional requirements of a medical space. The NDA design studio™ team faced challenges related to the integration of modern technological solutions and compliance with all safety standards but successfully overcame them, offering original and bold design solutions.
The result of the work was the realization of two philosophies that allow a new perspective on medicine, not just as special clothing for professionals but as a chance for medical staff to dress stylishly, while maintaining a recognizable aesthetic in the details. The interior includes numerous references to the lives and work of medical professionals — stainless steel sinks, surgical lamps and tables, glass blocks reminiscent of Soviet clinics, reflective metal surfaces, and retail equipment in the style of surgical steel. The final accent is an interactive feature in the form of a scrolling LED sign above the fitting rooms. When a customer enters a fitting room, they press a button, and the scrolling LED displays "Operation in progress," indicating that the fitting room is occupied.
NDA design studio™ continues to create commercial interiors that not only meet the requirements of retail and business functionality but also rethink and reveal the DNA of their clients to improve their market positioning.
