Casa 17 | KAL A
Madrid / Spain / 2024
Casa 17 is located in Acacias, a neighborhood very close to Atocha train station in Madrid. This area of the city was originally linked to the railroad industry and was finally integrated into the southern expansion of the capital (Castro Plan, 2nd half of the 19th century).
The project consists of the interior renovation of a 75 m2 house. To this end, a series of strategies are carried out that seek to renovate the property by highlighting the identity of the 1927 building in which it is located. The house had undergone several renovations over the last century that had completely blurred the perception of the original space.
In the demolition process, several original pavements were discovered. This found element became the essential material that articulates the character of the entire new house. The ceramic tiles, mostly terracotta red and 17.5 x 17.5 cm, originally came from the small village Arcos de Jalón (Soria). This provenance is not accidental, since the enclave became a strategic place for the railway network that used to link Madrid (Estación de Mediodía) with Zaragoza during the second half of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century.
As many tiles as possible were recovered and restored in the workshop. They’ve been installed in the entrance hall, bathroom, laundry room and the two terraces. The rest of the flooring is solved by a continuous cement surface, which emphasizes its neutrality and contrasts with the terracotta color of the server spaces.
The distribution strategy consists of maximizing the living areas of the house and its light, at the expense of reducing the number of rooms, which had been too compartmentalized and small. The kitchen and living space are connected, although separated by the structural wall of the first bay of the building. This element, which has three equal passageways, allows a constant and fluid relationship between the two spaces, while maintaining their independence.
The kitchen is custom designed and manufactured in KAL A's workshop, using a modular system of solid cherry slats, which organizes an open and functional kitchen, where flexible furniture and appliances can be integrated. This system allows for multiple further modifications and improvements that will transform the kitchen along with the way of living in the house. The industrial character of the environment is again sought to be recovered, which is also reflected in the finishes and metallic surfaces.
