The project takes place in an industrial warehouse located in an industrial park in Cornellà. It is a large warehouse: 35 meters long, 10 meters wide, and nearly 10 meters high. The developer wanted to transform the space into a fitness center, either Hyrox or CrossFit style.

The first time we visited the warehouse, it was clear that the intervention had to be an independent element that did not compete with the magnificence of the industrial structure, but rather highlighted it.

The program was quite simple: it required a large room for exercise practice and auxiliary elements to serve it, such as changing rooms and an emergency corridor in case of fire.

The intervention was summarized as concentrating all the program, except for the large room, into a volume that would be perceived as an addition within the warehouse. Furthermore, this volume should not interfere with the room intended for exercises, so as not to disrupt the flow of movement.

The auxiliary elements are grouped in the added volume, which takes on an elongated shape and is attached to one side of the warehouse, maximizing the available space for the main room. In this volume, the three changing rooms —male, female, and accessible— are organized, and parallel to them are the distributor and the emergency corridor.

The side of the added volume that faces the room adopts an organic geometry determined by the use of the spaces. At the entrance, it widens to create a storage area and an exhibition space, then narrows to provide more space to the room, and finally expands again in the distributor to allow for the turning of a person with a disability.

In terms of construction, this volume is built with concrete blocks and covered with a light wooden slab, allowing it to be used as a chill-out area. To finish it, corrugated galvanized steel sheeting is used, which enhances its organic and industrial character. Taking advantage of the center’s corporate colors, red is used in the interior of this volume, creating a contrast with the monochrome tone of the rest of the warehouse.

In the main warehouse, the intervention is limited to preserving the existing elements and improving the finishes, as well as the lighting. Finally, a reception area is designed to harmonize with the added volume. The reception desk also takes on an elongated geometry, with a wooden top (analogous to the light wooden slab of the added volume) and a corrugated galvanized steel base.
