Our clients had recently purchased this home for themselves to move in to. There was an existing simple white kitchen in place but was not to the taste of our clients who really loved and wanted more colour and personality represented in their home. These clients came to us with a request to have a new kitchen and record station designed – taking some inspiration from Danish MidCentury aesthetic as well as their own personal style. The clients had commissioned a piece of art work by local artist Pia Gynell-Jorgensen (@piapaella) and this inspired the colour pallet of the joinery. The brief for the space was to be colourful, textural and fun.
The clients have a large collection of records that they wanted to store in their open plan living area so we designed a record station that sat alongside the kitchen. Our intention with this piece was for it to connect to the kitchen but still standalone as a feature piece of joinery. We designed multiple open shelf units in a 2-tone finish to work uniformly with the colours coming through the kitchen- yellow frame with pink back panel. Extra storage for record overflow was designed under the open shelf unit and record player bench. The benchtop to the record area was designed to be at a lower height to differentiate this space from the kitchen. The splash back area to the record station was a combination of the tiled splash back from the kitchen as well as the benchtop.
A subtle detail designed to connect the two spaces on the back wall was a slim shaped tile trim in the same yellow finish which connected to a soap shelf – which both sat between the record station shelving and the kitchen overheads. This curved detail nods to various other areas of the kitchen- the curve of some bench corners, joinery ends, cylindrical dining table leg and notched out finger pull handle details.
The clients requested that their kitchen island be able to be used for food preparation as well as entertaining. However, they did not want any seating at the island, but instead they wanted a connected dining area that they could use for seating and dining. They were also in need of plenty of storage, so it was important that we optimized any area of storage possible.
We used integrated appliances in the kitchen space so there was a seamlessness with the colours in the space. A white sink connected to the freestanding cooker and a yellow mixer tap was selected to work in with the colour pallet.
Aside from handles on the integrated dishwasher and fridge, a notched out circular finger pull was used on the joinery fronts in lieu of a protruding handle.
To add to the playful nature of the kitchen, a large cylindrical leg painted in matching yellow was used as the leg to the dining table.
