Oasis in the city Tokyo / Japan / 2024
We wanted to create a comfortable space where people can immerse themselves in the feeling of being in nature, taking advantage of the features of the 8-meter span RC building. Even in the center of Tokyo, where many people come and go for business and sightseeing, once you step inside, a place like a meadow stretching out unfolds.
Although the plan's restrictions did not allow for a pillar in the center of the living room, the ceiling height was gradually raised by surrounding the pillar with a semicircular rib wall to avoid beams, making it resemble the trunk of a giant white tree. The ceiling, woven up on the pillars and steps, looks like a stalactite cave or a soft white cloud. Compared to a sunny day, a cloudy sky makes the overall illumination higher because the clouds diffuse the sky light, but it is not dazzling because you are not looking directly at the sun. The entire room is filled with a cozy, bright atmosphere. The large living room of approximately 80m2, which seems to be surrounded by soft white clouds, forms a place of diverse textures due to the difference in height between the central pillar and the ceiling.
Following the existing black sashes, black frames and matte gray are used for the fittings and the built-in furniture such as the washbasin counter. The monotone frames and the continuum of volumes create a stylish interior in which the functionally necessary elements are seen as objects. Even within the white walls, there are uneven areas, giving the space the appearance of a sculpture painted in clay, and textures similar to natural materials such as mortar, stone, and wood were used to give depth and texture to the space.
The island kitchen has a marble-like texture, and we were conscious of presenting it as an interior object rather than an equipment. The kitchen is integrated with the dining table, allowing the kitchen to overlook the living room. The dining table has a non-shaped curved shape, which allows the table to be surrounded from various directions, and the design does not limit the number of people who can sit at the table, making it easy to accommodate visitors.
One of the condominiums, built on a hilly terrain, can be approached from the ground level behind the building without having to dismantle the stairs, but the view at the foot of the hill can be seen from the fourth floor. At night, the night view of the city can be seen from the living room over the terrace. When the curtains are closed, the space is enveloped in bright light that differs from the daytime aspect due to the indirect lighting provided in the curtain box.
The rail of the curtain by the window in the service room also wraps around the door side to the living room, and the lace curtain by the window can be replaced by a curtain to block the view from the living room to the service room through the sliding glass door.
The wallpaper used in the service room and master bedroom was designed based on a work Van Gogh painted when his nephew was born. We hope that the calm color palette will give a sense of warmth to the room, and that it will become a place where people will be able to spend a long-lasting attachment to.
