Kivi Sauna | Ateljé Sotamaa

Located in the Finnish archipelago, Kivi-Sauna is built to endure the region’s challenging climate. Its aerodynamic shape and curved wooden panels are designed to adapt to the natural forces of the environment. Every element of the design, from its structure to its cladding, responds to the surrounding landscape.

Perched on the edge of a cliff, the sauna merges with the rocky terrain, appearing as both part of the natural landscape and a work of human craftsmanship. Sharp black cuts in the silvery facade reveal a small terrace with sweeping views of the sea. The design creates a seamless interaction between the building and the shifting light and weather of the archipelago.

Inside, the experience unfolds with intention. The enclosed dark entry creates a sense of quiet reflection, while the upper level opens to expansive views of the sea and archipelago, connecting the interior to the surrounding environment. The journey through the sauna reflects a deep relationship between architecture and nature, encouraging a thoughtful engagement with the landscape.
