Artist’s Kitchen | Sarah Jacoby Architect
New York / United States / 2024
For this project, we were hired to renovate the tiny kitchen of an artist based in New York. As an extension of her artistic practice, the design was informed by the artist’s attention to color and shape, which can be seen through the careful selection and installation of tiles for the backsplash sourced from Fireclay Handmade Tiles and painted custom millwork throughout. Lighting by In Common With and a locally-sourced lighting prodiver in Mattituck, Long Island were carefully selected in concert with the existing palette of colors and materials. The chairs were custom designed by artist Pam Lins, a friend of the artist.
In order to create the counter space, we removed a wall, which also housed the original location of the refrigerator. This slight reconfiguration achieved the artist’s goal of making the kitchen more accessible by providing more opportunity for connectivity throughout the one-bedroom apartment. Given the small scale, every detail was thoughtfully considered, resulting in a gem-like environment.
