Casa Romagnolo | Wespi de Meuron Romeo

The historic Casa Romagnolo is largely in good original condition in terms of design and architecture, and an attempt was made to support this quality and reinforce it with targeted corrections.

The most important elements in need of correction are the access and entrance situation and the north-facing extension for the bathrooms.

Access and entrance situation

The Casa Romagnolo with its almost monumental symmetrical double staircase on the richly designed main façade speaks for itself:

‘ Up the stairs! Here is my entrance! ’

However, this is no longer true today, you are led next to the house, the former main entrance on the main façade and the very striking double staircase is just a relic from a bygone era without any real purpose, its imposing design and current use contradict each other.

The relationship of the house to the village centre and its access was once very different from today; two houses in the village centre in the immediate vicinity were demolished for the construction of the new road, originally a village lane between these now demolished houses and the still existing stone wall led directly to their double staircase and main entrance.

With the demolition of the two village houses and the construction of the new street and its new retaining wall, the spatial situation was completely changed and, unfortunately, many urban qualities were destroyed.

On the one hand, Casa Romagnolo lost its classic rectangular and level front garden, which - unlike today - could actually be used, and on the other hand, the demolition of the two village houses meant that it lost its connection to the village centre.

And finally, the new garden staircase, which now leads from the street to the house, was laid out incorrectly, probably by chance, so that it leads past the main entrance, thus devaluing it as a whole.

The Casa Romagnolo thus lost its original clear access and entrance situation.

Compared to the significant and imposing design of the main façade, it now stands somewhat strangely lost in the front garden above the new retaining wall, with no real connection to the street.

With the removal of the existing garden steps from the street and the creation of a new natural stone-paved, flat-sloped and inviting access staircase leading directly to the historic double staircase, the access and entrance situation is clarified again, but in a new way. And that's not all: with this design, you can also choose to enter the house through the basement with its very attractive vaulted cellars, or via the historic double staircase on the ground floor, allowing the house to be experienced and enlivened even more as a whole.

Although the new flat-sloped access staircase is symmetrical to the house, it is not precisely symmetrical in detail, so as not to exaggerate the monumentality of the Casa Romagnolo.

This concept corrects an urban planning error of the modern era, at least as far as it is still possible today.

North-facing extension

We consider the north-facing extension from a more recent period in a ‘historicising style’ to be inappropriate to the original historical context and devalues the Casa Romagnolo. However, the location of the bathrooms and the technical room below is functionally correct.

The new bathrooms remain in the existing location, but with a clear, contemporary architectural design in the context of the historic Casa Romagnolo.

The extension is not intended to chum up the house in a deliberate sameness, but rather to appear as part of the garden, as not really belonging to the historic house.

This goal is served by the materialisation of the extension in dry stone masonry analogous to the existing garden walls and the external courtyards in front of the two bathrooms.

Following the same basic idea, the inner forecourt in front of the baths has a glazed roof; thus this zone is also experienced as an outdoor space inside, albeit covered with glass, one is already outside the historic house here, the baths are outside the house in the garden, as it were.

The flat roof has a natural stone paving, i.e. also stone like the historic sloping roof, but in a more contemporary, abstract form.

Die historische Casa Romagnolo ist betreffend Gestaltung und Architektur weitgehend in gutem Originalzustand, es wurde versucht diese Qualität zu unterstützen und mit gezielten Korrekturen zu verstärken.

Die wesentlichsten Elemente, welche einer Korrektur bedürfen, sind die Zugangs- und Eingangssituation, der nordseitige Anbau für die Bäder.

Zugangs- und Eingangssituation

Die Casa Romagnolo mit ihrer fast etwas monumentalen symmetrischen Doppeltreppe an der reichhaltig gestalten Hauptfassade spricht eine eindeutige Sprache:

" Die Treppe hinauf! Hier ist mein Eingang! "

Dies stimmt aber heute so nicht mehr, man wird neben das Haus geführt, der ehemalige Haupteingang an der Hauptfassade und die sehr markante Doppeltreppe ist nur ein Relikt aus vergangener Zeit, ohne noch wirklich einen Sinn zu haben, ihre imposante Gestaltung und die heutige Nutzung widersprechen sich.

Die Beziehung des Hauses zum Dorfkern und Ihre Erschliessung war einmal ganz anders als heute; für den Bau der neuen Strasse wurden zwei Häuser des Dorfkerns in unmittelbarer Nachbarschaft abgebrochen, ursprünglich führte eine Dorfgasse zwischen diesen nun abgebrochenen Häusern und der immer noch bestehenden Steinmauer direkt auf deren Doppeltreppe und Haupteingang zu.

Mit dem Abbruch der beiden Dorfhäuser und dem Bau der neuen Strasse und deren neuen Stützmauer wurde die räumliche Situation komplett verändert, und leider viele städtebauliche Qualitäten zerstört.

Einerseits verlor die Casa Romagnolo ihren klassischen rechteckigen und auch ebenen Vorgarten, welcher - anders als heute - auch wirklich genutzt werden konnte, andererseits durch den Abbruch der beiden Dorfhäuser ihre Anbindung an den Dorfkern.

Und schliesslich wurde die neue Gartentreppe, welche nun von der Strasse zum Haus führt, wohl eher zufällig, falsch angelegt, sodass sie am Haupteingang vorbeiführt, und somit diese als Ganzes nochmals abwertet.

Die Casa Romagnolo verlor damit ihre ursprünglich klare Zugangs- und Eingangssituation.

Gemessen an ihrer bedeutungsvollen imposanten Gestaltung der Hauptfassade steht sie heute etwas eigenartig verloren im Vorgarten über der neuen Stützmauer, ohne wirklichen Bezug zur Strasse. 

Mit der Aufhebung der bestehenden Gartentreppe ab der Strasse und der Schaffung einer neuen natursteingepflästerten, flachgeneigten und einladenden Zugangstreppe, welche direkt zur historischen Doppeltreppe führt, wird die Zugangs- und Eingangssituation wieder, aber in neuer Weise geklärt. Und nicht nur dies: mit dieser Konzeption kann man wahlweise auch durch das Untergeschoss mit den sehr attraktiven Gewölbekellern ins Haus eintreten, oder über die historische Doppeltreppe im Erdgeschoss, womit das Haus noch mehr als Ganzes erlebt und belebt werden kann.

Die neue flachgeneigte Zugangstreppe ist zwar in der Grundhaltung symmetrisch zum Haus hin angelegt, im Detail aber nicht ganz präzise symmetrisch, um die Monumentalität der Casa Romagnolo doch nicht zu überhöhen.

Mit dieser Konzeption wird ein städtebaulicher Fehler der Neuzeit, wenigsten so weit, wie dies heute noch möglich ist, korrigiert.

Nordseitiger Anbau

Der nordseitige Anbau aus neuerer Zeit in "historisierendem Stil" erachten wir als dem originalen historischen Kontext nicht angemessen und wertet die Casa Romagnolo ab. Die Lage der Bäder und des darunterliegenden Technikraums ist jedoch funktional richtig.

Die neuen Bäder bleiben am bestehenden Ort, jedoch in klarer zeitgemässer architektonischer Gestaltung im Kontext mit der historischen Casa Romagnolo.

Der Anbau soll sich dem Haus nicht in gewollter Gleichartigkeit anbiedern, sondern vielmehr als Teil des Gartens, als nicht wirklich dem historischen Haus zugehörig in Erscheinung treten.

Diesem Ziel dient die Materialisierung des Anbaus in Trockensteinmauerwerk analog der bestehenden Gartenmauern und die den beiden Bädern vorgelagerten Aussenhöfe.

Die innere Vorzone vor den Bädern weist, der gleichen Grundidee folgend, eine Dachverglasung auf; somit wird diese Zone auch im Innern bereits als Aussenraum erlebt, zwar mit Glas überdeckt, man befindet sich hier bereits ausserhalb des historischen Hauses, die Bäder befinden sich gleichsam ausserhalb des Hauses im Garten.

Das flache Dach weist eine Natursteinpflästerung auf, also auch Stein wie beim historischen schrägen Hausdach, aber horzontal in zeitgemäss abstrakterer Form.
