What happens if, instead of focusing on the form as a solid, as a construction and physicality, attention is placed on the gap, on the form of the void that matter itself leaves free? Absence gives meaning to presence …By working on the sensation of being there, the aim is to directly give the viewer the option to continue and partially complete the void left by the apparent absence with their own human presence.

Casa Solar is a commission for a family that chose to live in an environment of high natural and landscape value. The house has an area of ​​250m2 and is located in Villa Parque Siquiman, on a plot of 1850m2.

The land consists of a natural ravine, 10m deep, which acts as a drain for the entire surrounding area, channeling rainwater towards Lake San Roque. The soil is rocky interspersed with bushes and abundant mountain forest, which absorb part of the water that passes through the place.

From the street, the views towards the Lake are very wide and change depending on the time of day and year.

We are in a context in which cities are growing, expanding across the land that surrounds them, a world increasingly concerned about the future we are forging, generating permanent tensions, responses and exchanges between architecture and nature.

The need arises for project research to intervene in these sites with a low environmental impact, where simplicity, austerity and sensitivity forge an architecture that is integrally sustainable.

The project is based on the Leed v4 certification criteria, highlighting all the natural resources and materials available on the site, interacting with them in decision making.

Natural resources and project.

The house is positioned in the depth of the ravine, using the cavity to support the house and reduce its visual impact from the street, as well as to protect it. The existing humidity is used as a buffer of temperature difference, the forest vegetation acts as a double protective façade from the sun and wind, the visuals participate in the spaces of the house through reflections, different levels of games of light and shadows, Solar energy is used in a controlled manner through a mobile roof and the adjacent house emerges as a complementary element of the whole.

Floating inclined box

A structural box of steel profiles leans with the cover accompanying the slope towards the lake floating over the ravine and over the water of the pools.

The structure of a modulation of 4.50m x 4.50m in plan forms a total extension of 12.00 x 9.00m and 6.00 in height to contain a social and rest area. The steel box allows a 3m cantilever towards the park, so the house seems to be in the air when seen from below, resting its columns on the existing rocks and on reinforced concrete partitions that form a transitional basement that contains the swimming pools and technical areas.

Accessibility and movements.

From the street we descend 3m to the intermediate access level, there, an esplanade/viewpoint puts us in contact with the landscape before entering the house through the blind side of the south façade. The contrast upon entering is total when coming into contact with the fluid, luminous interior social space open to the landscape. The L-shaped distribution in 2 directions surrounds the empty and semi-covered space that has the mobile roof. The integrated social space, with a central island kitchen, enables multiple uses and seasonal adaptations in its interior-exterior relationships. This intermediate level serves as a connector with the lower basement/pool/patio area, and with the upper rest and study area. 

Climate, temperature, full and empty. 

The house is structured from an empty space of 4.50m x 9.00m, mobile, changing and it is through this absence that a reflection is sought on the relationship between architecture and nature typical of our time. The empty space, missing from a solid volume, is expressed as a space of the possible, a lock that, when opened and closed, controls the sunlight, the climate, the use and the interior spatial conditions of the house.

This intermediate and interstitial space highlights the environmental and visual relationships with the natural environment, creating a structure that evolves over time, with life, with humanity and with architecture.

The vacuum incorporates time and contemporary energy of sustainable thinking by adding to the fluid and moving space-time in a simple but significant way the energetic and thermal control of the interior spatiality creating diverse atmospheres. The possibility of the cover being closed by a motor that is activated according to the temperature, completely at times of full solar incidence, and of graduating according to the solar radiation necessary for interior conditioning, both in winter (necessary sunshine) and in summer (controlled sunshine) produce a novel fact where the qualities of the interior and exterior space change according to the amount of solar energy necessary to produce comfort and energy savings.

Water cycle and health

Concern for the water resource, which is scarce most of the year, and respect for the natural drainage existing in the ravine are contemplated, locating the house elevated from the ground, allowing free runoff and permeability, nourishing layers and the existing vegetation cover.

The pools located below are filled with rainwater from the sloping roof and, being integrated into the house, provide humidity and heat in winter and freshness in summer, as well as offering the possibility of a shaded swim in summer for the skin care since direct solar radiation is controlled.

Finally, gray water is treated with a biodigester and reused for irrigation of the orchard and forest.

Local materials and resources

The decision to use simple, locally produced low-cost materials leads to few materials that are easy to transport and lightweight and easy to assemble.

Towards the street, the house appears introverted, blind and austere to the south and west, with a vertical exterior envelope produced with fiber cement plates colored in dark wood like the forest, of different thickness and width interspersed, which reduce the impact. visual appearance of the block, along with the surrounding reflections that are produced by the satin finish. Only a rectangular outward opening containing a bookcase breaks the block.

Inside, the use of tongue-and-groove elliotis pine wood as cladding is framed and ordered through the profiles of the exposed steel structure. This main structure is resolved with reused demolition steel profiles.

¿Qué sucede si, en lugar de centrarse en la forma en cuanto sólido, en cuanto construcción y fisicidad, la atención se coloca en el hueco, en la forma del vacío que la materia misma deja libre?, la ausencia da sentido a la presencia … Al trabajar sobre la sensación de estar ahí, se pretende dar directamente al espectador la opción de continuar y parcialmente completar con su propia presencia humana el vacío dejado por la aparente ausencia.

Casa Solar es un encargo para una familia que eligió vivir en un entorno de alto valor natural y paisajístico, la casa tiene una superficie de  250m2 y está ubicada en Villa Parque Siquiman, en un terreno de 1850m2.

El terreno consta de una barranca natural,  de 10m de profundidad , que actúa como desagüe de toda el área circundante, canalizando el agua de lluvia hacia el Lago San Roque. El suelo es rocoso intercalado con arbustos y abundante bosque serrano, que absorben parte del agua que pasa por el lugar.

Desde la calle, las  visuales hacia el Lago son muy amplias y cambiantes según el momento del día y del año.

Estamos en un contexto en el que las ciudades crecen, expandiéndose por el terreno que las rodea, un mundo cada vez más preocupado por el futuro que estamos forjándonos, generando permanentes tensiones, respuestas e intercambios entre la arquitectura-naturaleza.
Surge la necesidad de investigación proyectual para intervenir en estos sitios  con un bajo impacto ambiental, donde la simpleza, austeridad y sensibilidad forjen una  arquitectura que sea sostenible de manera integral.

El proyecto se basa en los criterios de la certificación Leed v4 , poniendo  en valor todos los recursos naturales y materiales disponibles en el sitio,  interactuando con ellos en la toma de decisiones. 

Recursos naturales y proyecto.

La casa se posiciona en la profundidad de la barranca, utilizando la cavidad  se utiliza para apoyar  la casa y disminuir su impacto visual desde la calle, así como también para protegerla. La humedad existente se utiliza como un amortiguador de diferencia de temperatura,  la vegetación del bosque actúa como doble fachada protectora del sol y del viento, las visuales participan de los espacios de la casa a través de reflejos, diferentes niveles  juegos de luces y sombras, la energía solar se utiliza de manera controlada a través de un techo móvil y la casa colindante, surge como elemento complementario de conjunto. 

Caja inclinada flotante

Una caja estructural de perfilería de acero  se inclina con la cubierta acompañando la pendiente hacia el lago flotando sobre la barranca y sobre el agua de las piscinas.

La estructura de una modulación de 4.50m x 4.50m en planta conforma una extensión total de  12.00 x 9.00m y 6.00 de altura para contener área social y de descanso. La caja de acero, permite un voladizo de 3m hacia el parque, por lo que  la casa parece estar en  el aire al verla desde abajo apoyando sus columnas sobre las rocas existentes y sobre tabiques de hormigón armado que conforman  un basamento de transición que contiene las piscinas y áreas técnicas. 

Accesibilidad y movimientos. 

Desde la calle se desciende 3m hasta el nivel intermedio de acceso, allí, una explanada/mirador nos pone en contacto con el paisaje antes de ingresar a la casa por el lado ciego de la fachada sur. El contraste al ingresar al es total al entrar en contacto con el espacio social interior  fluido, luminoso y abierto  al paisaje,  La distribución en 2 direcciones en forma de L envuelve el espacio vacío y semi cubierto que posee el techo móvil. El espacio social  integrado, con cocina en isla central posibilita usos múltiples y adaptaciones estacionales en sus relaciones interior exterior. Este nivel intermedio sirve como conector con el área  inferior de subsuelo /piscinas / patio, y con el área superior de descanso y estudio. 

Clima, temperatura , llenos y vacíos.

La casa se estructura a partir de un espacio vacío de 4,50m x 9.00 m, móvil, cambiante y es a través de esta ausencia, donde se busca una  reflexión sobre la relación entre arquitectura y naturaleza propia de nuestro tiempo. El espacio vacío, faltante de un volumen sólido se expresa como espacio de lo posible, una exclusa  que al abrirse y cerrarse controla el asoleamiento, el clima, el uso y las condiciones espaciales interiores de la casa. 

Este  espacio intermedio e intersticial pone en valor las relaciones ambientales y visuales con el entorno natural, creando una estructura que evoluciona con el tiempo, con la vida, con la humanidad y con la arquitectura.

El vacío incorpora el tiempo y la energía  contemporánea del pensamiento sostenible agregando al espacio-temporal  fluido y en movimiento de manera simple pero significativa el control energético y térmico de la espacialidad interior creando diversas atmósferas . La posibilidad de la  cubierta de cerrarse mediante un motor que se acciona según la temperatura, por completo en momentos de incidencia solar plena, y de irse graduando según la radiación solar necesaria para el acondicionamiento interior, tanto en invierno (insolación necesaria)  como en verano (insolación controlada) producen un hecho novedoso donde las cualidades del espacio interior y exterior cambian según la cantidad de energía solar necesaria para producir confort y ahorro energético

Ciclo del agua y salud 

La preocupación por el recurso agua, escaso la mayor parte del año y el  respeto al desagüe natural existente en la barranca son contemplados, ubicando la casa elevada del suelo permitiendo el libre escurrimiento y permeabilidad nutriendo napas y el manto vegetal existente.  

Las piscinas ubicadas debajo se llenan con el agua de lluvia proveniente de la cubierta inclinada y al estar integradas a la casa, aportan humedad y calor en invierno y frescura en verano , así como también ofrecen la posibilidad de  un baño con sombra  en verano para el  cuidado de la piel ya que se controla la radiación solar directa.

Por último, las aguas grises son tratadas con un biodigestor y reutilizadas para riego del huerto y del bosque. 

Materiales y recursos locales

La decisión de utilizar materiales de bajo costo simples y de producción local, lleva a pocos materiales de fácil transporte y de livianos de fácil ensamblado.

Hacia la calle, la casa se muestra introvertida, ciega y austera al sur y al oeste , con una envolvente exterior  de  sentido vertical producido con placas de fibrocemento coloreado  color madera oscura como el bosque, de diferente espesor y ancho intercalados, que disminuyen el impacto visual del bloque, junto con los reflejos de entorno que son producidos por la terminación satinada. Solo una abertura rectangular hacia afuera que contiene una biblioteca rompe el bloque.

En el interior la utilización de madera machimbrada de pino elliotis como revestimiento es enmarcada y ordenada a través de la perfilería de la estructura de acero a la vista . Esta estructura principal se resuelve con perfilería de acero demolición reutilizada.
