La Fenice del Monte Cervino: a jewel in the Alps reborn from its own ashes

Once known as Villa Bacchini, named after its owner, the inventor of the famous Allocchio-Bacchini radio, it represented one of the few villas in the international ski resort of Cervinia since the 1930s. A tragic fate marked its history, when, in 1980, the confluence of two avalanches caused its destruction. The original owners chose to sell what remained of the structure to the Harrison family of London, who, fascinated by old photographs of the residence and with a desire to restore the property to its former glory, rebuilt the villa. Hence, the commitment to revive this historic building from its ashes; thus, the name La Fenice del Monte Cervino was born. Respecting the tradition of the old chalet while ensuring a high level of comfort inspired the renovation work of architect Mariapia Bettiol and her team, in collaboration with interior contractor Concreta, completed in 2021. The intent was to create a place designed both to be lived in and to be rented out to customers. For this reason, in addition to the classic residential functions, the structure includes typical hôtellerie activities, such as a spa with a large indoor pool, a sauna, a Turkish bath, an outdoor whirlpool, a gym, a cinema room, a ski room, and a bike room. La Fenice del Monte Cervino covers an area of 1,200 m² across six floors. The building features seven double rooms, a larger and more private living room, a dining room, a buffet area, and a kitchen. The magical atmosphere of this unspoiled place is reflected in the architecture, which is in perfect harmony with the outdoor: architect Bettiol's design concept involved using exposed stone and wood, recalling the tradition of mountain chalets. A rustic mood that interacts with more sophisticated and modern materials, such as velvet and crystal, all complemented by a neoclassical touch - a style particularly cherished by the Harrison family. The chalet's incredible spaces create an intimate and warm atmosphere with a strong connection to nature and the surrounding landscape, offering a way to experience the mountains that reflects the classic chalet aesthetic of light tones.

The beating heart of the building is the large, open living room, defined by the presence of a magnificent fireplace, which serves as the focal point for both the surrounding furniture and the dining area from which it can be admired. Embedded in a wall, it divides the living area into two separate spaces due to its double opening, allowing a perfect view of the fire from both rooms. The great scenic effect of the fireplace is highlighted by Geopietra®, the natural manufactured stone, which is used to clad the large wall that houses it. The stone model is Briano, dry-laid, which adds a spontaneous touch to the modern and linear design, enhanced by the stone's distinctive variegated shape. Enhancing the stability and three-dimensionality of the masonry are the corner stones, which are integrated into the corners of the cladding. The shade of the stones is Grigio Chiaro, in perfect harmony with the soft shades of the refined furnishings. The hallways leading to the bedrooms and wardrobes are also transformed into impressive spaces thanks to the manufactured stone finish, whose light shades create a beautiful contrast with the warm tones of the wood. All this is La Fenice del Monte Cervino: a fairy-tale place, brought back to life after forty years. A symbol of architecture and design, it sets a new standard for luxury while preserving the homely atmosphere of a mountain lodge.

Un tempo conosciuta come Villa Bacchini, dal nome del proprietario, l’inventore della celebre radio Allocchio-Bacchini, rappresentava una delle poche ville del comprensorio sciistico internazionale di Cervinia fin dagli anni Trenta. Un tragico destino segna la sua vita poiché nel 1980 la confluenza di due valanghe ne provocò la distruzione. I proprietari originari scelsero di vendere quanto rimaneva della struttura alla famiglia Harrison di Londra, che affascinata dalle vecchie fotografie della residenza e con il desiderio di riportare la proprietà al suo antico splendore, ricostruirono la villa. Da qui l’impegno a far rinascere questo storico edificio dalle sue ceneri: nacque così il nome la Fenice del Monte Cervino. Rispettare la tradizione dell’antico chalet senza rinunciare ad un alto livello di comfort è ciò che ha ispirato il lavoro di rinnovamento dell’architetto Mariapia Bettiol e del suo team in collaborazione con l’interior contractor Concreta, terminato nel 2021. L’intento era quello di dare vita a un luogo concepito come uno spazio da abitare e allo stesso tempo da affittare alla clientela. Per questo motivo all’interno della struttura le classiche funzioni residenziali affiancano attività tipiche dell’hôtellerie, come la spa con un’ampia piscina interna, sauna, bagno turco e idromassaggio esterno, la palestra, la sala cinema, la Ski Room e infine la Bike Room. La Fenice del Monte Cervino copre una superficie di 1200 m² sviluppati su sei livelli. All’interno della struttura sono state ricavate sette camere doppie, un salone più grande e uno più riservato, una sala da pranzo, una zona buffet e una cucina. L’atmosfera magica che regala questo luogo incontaminato si riflette nell’architettura in perfetta armonia con l’ambiente esterno: il concept progettuale dell’architetto Bettiol è stato impostato sull’utilizzo della pietra e del legno a vista richiamando la tradizione degli chalet di montagna. Un mood rustico che dialoga con materiali più sofisticati e moderni come il velluto e il cristallo; il tutto completato da un tocco neoclassico, stile particolarmente caro alla famiglia Harrison. Gli incredibili spazi dello chalet creano un mood intimo e caldo, con una forte connessione con la natura e il paesaggio circostante, proponendo un modo di vivere la montagna che riflette l’estetica classica dello chalet costituito da tonalità chiare.

Il cuore pulsante della struttura è l’ampio e aperto living definito dalla presenza di un magnifico camino, punto di riferimento degli arredi che gli ruotano attorno e del soggiorno da cui è possibile ammirarlo. Incassato in una parete, esso separa la zona giorno in due saloni grazie alla sua duplice apertura, permettendo una perfetta visione del fuoco da entrambi gli ambienti. Il grande effetto scenografico che il camino regala è messo in risalto dalla pietra ricostruita Geopietra® utilizzata per il rivestimento della grande parete che lo ospita. Il modello di pietra che compone la sua tessitura è il Briano posato a secco: esso conferisce al design moderno e lineare un accenno spontaneo, esaltato dalla forma variegata che contraddistingue la pietra. Ad apportare stabilità e un maggior valore di tridimensionalità alla muratura sono le pietre angolari, integrate negli angoli del rivestimento. La tonalità della pietra è il Grigio Chiaro, in perfetta armonia con le sfumature tenui dei raffinati arredi. Anche i corridoi che conducono alle camere da letto e ai guardaroba si trasformano in spazi d’effetto grazie alla finitura in pietra ricostruita, le cui sfumature chiare creano giochi di contrasto con le tonalità calde del legno. Tutto questo è la Fenice del Monte Cervino: un luogo fiabesco, ritornato in vita dopo quarant’anni. Emblema di architettura e design, esso stabilisce un nuovo standard per il lusso senza rinunciare all’atmosfera familiare di un rifugio di montagna.
