Casa Rodríguez | Veintedoce Arquitectura

House Rodríguez, located in Mexicali, is the home of a young family that enjoys gardens and outdoor living. What governs the organization of its spaces and circulation is the proximity to the perimeter garden, allowing for contemplation from all interior spaces. The curves applied at the intersection and corners of four volumes guide a passage that leads to spaces surrounded by vegetation and natural light.

The house welcomes you with a concrete porche, a characteristic gesture of houses in the region, necessary for waiting during hot months. The entrance reveals the most public area: a double-height living room illuminated by a skylight. The curved walls that delimit it also lead to the social area of the house. The family room-dining room-kitchen open plan opens onto the patio, designed for sharing and enjoyment. The visual axis of an open plan with a large garden and patio in the background was the family's desire from the beginning of the project.

On the ground floor, what appears to be a monolithic concrete object on which the slab rests is actually a curved wall that houses a bathroom. This articulates a radial circulation around it that leads to the staircase. The curved geometry of the concrete staircase allows the bathroom on the upper floor to be situated within a curved wall. The project is organized with the master bedroom on the ground floor, with a direct connection to the rear garden, while the other two bedrooms and living room are on the upper floor, thus leaving the largest area available for the backyard and garden.

The garden is divided into two parts: the front, which embraces the living room, porche, and the lower part of the stairs that hang suspended outside; and the rear garden, which connects to the interior social open plan and contains the barbecue area, an essential space in Mexicali culture.

Two material bands unify the volumes: an apparent finish of vertically casted reinforced concrete walls defines the lower one, while a plaster of cement and dune sand defines the upper band. The separation of both materials is accentuated with a joint in the plaster, which makes the thickness of the slab evident. The material intention is to be a neutral background for the future dense garden and to highlight the curved characteristics of its walls.

Casa Rodríguez, ubicada en Mexicali, es la casa de una familia joven que disfruta de jardines y de compartir al aire libre. Lo que rige la organización de sus espacios y circulación es la proximidad al jardín exterior perimetral, lo que permite su contemplación desde todos sus espacios interiores. Las curvas aplicadas en la intersección y esquinas de cuatro volúmenes guían un pasaje que desemboca en espacios rodeados de vegetación y luz natural.

La casa te recibe con un tejaban de concreto, gesto característico de casas de la región y necesario para la espera en meses calurosos. El acceso revela el área más pública: una estancia de doble altura iluminada por un tragaluz. Los muros curvos que la delimitan desembocan también en el área social de la casa. Este espacio sala-comedor-cocina se abre al patio, diseñado para compartir y disfrutar. El eje visual de una planta abierta con un gran jardín y patio al fondo fue el deseo de la familia desde el inicio del proyecto.

En planta baja, lo que parece ser un objeto monolítico de concreto sobre el cual descansa la losa, es en realidad un muro curvo que alberga un medio baño. Este articula una circulación radial al mismo, circulación que llega a la escalera. La geometría curva de la escalera de concreto permite que el baño en planta alta se situé dentro de un muro interior curvo. El proyecto se organiza con la recámara principal en planta baja, con conexión directa al jardín posterior; mientras que las otras dos recámaras y estancia más privada se encuentran en planta alta, dejando así la mayor área disponible para el patio trasero y jardín.

El jardín se divide en dos: el frontal, que abraza la estancia, tejaban y la parte inferior de las escaleras que quedan suspendidas en el exterior; y el jardín posterior, que se relaciona con el área social interior y contiene el área de asador, espacio indispensable en la cultura mexicalense.

Los volúmenes son unificados por dos franjas materiales: la inferior se define por el acabado aparente de muros de concreto armado cimbrados verticalmente y la superior se define con un emplaste de cemento y arena de duna. La separación de ambas se acentúa con un junquillo en el emplaste que hace evidente el espesor de la losa. La intención material es ser un fondo neutral para el futuro denso jardín y resaltar las características formales curvas.
