Arena for a Tree, Venice

Opening April 2024, Arena for a Tree by Klaus Littmann will be presented in Venice for the very first time. Coinciding with the launch of the 60th International Art Exhibition, Arena for a Tree is poised to deliver a poignant message on global warming and sustainability.
Nestled against the backdrop of the historic Arsenale Nord, the temporary installation stands as an ark with a sole protagonist at its centre: the tree. From afar, the Arena for a Tree looks like a sprouting seed capsule. Up close, it is sculpture, architecture and podium at the same time: the grandstand offers three rows of seating and can accommodate 50 people at the time – creating an intimate experience and ideal view of the living trees whose roots are immersed in a water basin.

Drawing inspiration from the main exhibition of the Biennale, titled "Stranieri Ovunque – Foreigners Everywhere," Arena for a Tree explores themes of migration and identity. Over extended geological epochs, the bald cypress (Taxodium distichum), featured in the installation, has been indigenous to 

various regions worldwide. While its current habitat primarily spans vast areas of central and south America, the looming spectre of global warming hints at its potential to take root in Europe.
Hardy and tough, this tree adapts to a wide range of soil types, whether wet, salty, dry, or swampy. It is noted for the russet-red fall colour of its lacy needles.

‘The Bald Cypress has an exceptional ability to pump up to 800l of flood water per day, to cool the surrounding atmosphere, to withstand hurricane level winds and storms, and temperature extremes, making it particularly resilient to the challenges of climate change and some of the challenges faced by Venice in particular.’ says landscape architect Enzo Enea, who has been collaborating with Littmann.

Arena for a Tree is an everlasting image and evolution of FOR FOREST: The Unending Attraction of Nature, Austria‘s largest public art installation, where 299 trees of up to 14 metres high were placed on the football field of the Wörthersee Stadium in Klagenfurt in 2019. This long term touring project by the Kulturstiftung Basel H. Geiger was first presented on Münsterplatz in Basel with its accompanying exhibition Tree Connections in 2021, and in spring 2022 in the inner courtyard of the Swiss National Museum in Zurich. Venice is its third and last destination - and the first to include water as another critical global environmental element.

Designed by Littmann and engineered by Schnetzer Puskas Engineers, the arena is formed by a basket-like, 7 metres high translucent structure of wooden ribs and slats. Its curved and haunched laminated beams are bound together at the top by a tension ring and at the bottom by a steel compression belt. Seen in plan view, the design of the structure and the inner grandstand represent the trunk of a tree in cross section with its concentric pattern of growth rings.

What Klaus Littmann cleverly isolates can momentarily rearrange our view of the world. The artist and curator has experience in inviting broad audiences to participate in an all encompassing experience. As a source of shade or as a host for birds and insects, his small temporary nature preserve presents itself as a quiet sensation.

‘When the trees are in leaf, we see a beacon of hope in them. When they drop their leaves, we think about impermanence. The tree is a sign of life, a representative of the diversity of species and a witness to the vulnerability of the global ecosystem.’ says Klaus Littmann.

Incastonata sullo sfondo dello storico Arsenale Nord, l'installazione temporanea si erge come un'arca con un unico protagonista al suo centro: l'albero. Da lontano, Arena for a Tree sembra una capsula di seme germogliante. Da vicino, è scultura, architettura e podio allo stesso tempo: la tribuna offre tre file di posti a sedere e può ospitare 50 persone alla volta, creando un'esperienza intima e una vista ideale degli alberi viventi le cui radici sono immerse in una vasca d'acqua.

Ispirandosi alla mostra principale della Biennale, intitolata "Stranieri Ovunque - Foreigners Everywhere," Arena for a Tree esplora temi di migrazione e identità. Nel corso di epoche geologiche estese, il cipresso calvo (Taxodium distichum), protagonista dell'installazione, è stato indigeno in varie regioni del mondo. "Il cipresso calvo ha una capacità eccezionale di pompare fino a 800 litri di acqua alluvionale al giorno, di raffreddare l'atmosfera circostante, di resistere a venti e uragani, e alle estreme temperature, rendendolo particolarmente resiliente alle sfide del cambiamento climatico e ad alcune delle sfide affrontate da Venezia in particolare." afferma l'architetto paesaggista Enzo Enea, che ha collaborato con Littmann.

Arena for a Tree è un'immagine eterna e un'evoluzione di FOR FOREST: The Unending Attraction of Nature, la più grande installazione d'arte pubblica austriaca, dove nel 2019 sono stati piantati 299 alberi alti fino a 14 metri sul campo da calcio dello Stadio Wörthersee a Klagenfurt. Il progetto itinerante Arena for a Tree della Kulturstiftung Basel H. Geiger è stato presentato per la prima volta nel 2021 su Münsterplatz a Basilea, con la sua mostra correlata Tree Connections, e nella primavera del 2022 nel cortile interno del Museo Nazionale Svizzero a Zurigo. Visto in pianta, il design della struttura e della tribuna interna rappresentano il tronco di un albero in sezione trasversale con il suo motivo concentrico degli anelli di crescita.

Ciò che Klaus Littmann isola abilmente può momentaneamente riorganizzare la nostra visione del mondo. L'artista e curatore ha esperienza nell'invitare un vasto pubblico a partecipare a un'esperienza totalmente coinvolgente. Come fonte di ombra o come ospite per uccelli e insetti, la sua piccola riserva naturale temporanea si presenta come una sensazione di pace.

"Quando gli alberi sono in foglia, vediamo in loro una luce di speranza. Quando perdono le foglie, pensiamo all'impermanenza. L'albero è un segno di vita, un rappresentante della diversità delle specie e un testimone della vulnerabilità dell'ecosistema globale." dice Klaus Littmann.

Internationalen Kunstausstellung, soll Arena for a Tree eine wichtige Botschaft über den Klimawandel und Nachhaltigkeit vermitteln. Eingebettet vor dem Hintergrund des historischen Arsenale Nord, erhebt sich die temporäre Installation wie eine Arche mit einem einzigen Protagonisten in ihrer Mitte: dem Baum. Aus der Ferne sieht die Arena for a Tree wie eine keimende Samenkapsel aus. Aus der Nähe betrachtet, ist sie gleichzeitig Skulptur, Architektur und Podium: Die Tribüne bietet drei Reihen von Sitzplätzen und kann 50 Personen gleichzeitig aufnehmen, was ein intimes Erlebnis und eine ideale Aussicht auf die lebenden Bäume ermöglicht, deren Wurzeln in einem Wasserbecken eingetaucht sind.

Inspiriert von der Hauptausstellung der Biennale mit dem Titel "Stranieri Ovunque - Ausländer Überall" erforscht Arena for a Tree Themen der Migration und Identität. Über lange geologische Epochen hinweg war der "Bald Cypress" (Taxodium distichum), der in der Installation eine prominente Rolle spielt, in 

verschiedenen Regionen der Welt heimisch. Während ihr aktuelles Habitat hauptsächlich große Teile von Zentral- und Südamerika umfasst, deutet das drohende Gespenst der globalen Erwärmung darauf hin, dass sie auch in Europa Fuß fassen könnte. Robust und widerstandsfähig passt sich dieser Baum einer Vielzahl von Bodentypen an, ob nass, salzig, trocken oder sumpfig. Er ist bekannt für die rötlich-braune Herbstfärbung seiner zarten Nadeln.

"Der Bald Cypress hat eine außergewöhnliche Fähigkeit, bis zu 800 Liter Hochwasser pro Tag zu pumpen, die umgebende Atmosphäre zu kühlen, Stürme zu überstehen und extremen Temperaturen zu trotzen, was ihn besonders widerstandsfähig gegen die Herausforderungen des Klimawandels und einige der Herausforderungen macht, denen insbesondere Venedig gegenübersteht." sagt Landschaftsarchitekt Enzo Enea, der mit Littmann zusammenarbeitet.

Die Arena for a Tree ist ein ewiges Bild und eine Weiterentwicklung von FOR FOREST: The Unending Attraction of Nature, der größten öffentlichen Kunstinstallation Österreichs, bei der 2019 299 Bäume von bis zu 14 Metern Höhe auf dem Fußballfeld des Wörthersee-Stadions in Klagenfurt gepflanzt wurden. Dieses langfristige Tournee-Projekt der Kulturstiftung Basel H. Geiger wurde erstmals 2021 auf dem Münsterplatz in Basel mit der begleitenden Ausstellung Tree Connections und im Frühjahr 2022 im Innenhof des Schweizerischen Nationalmuseums in Zürich präsentiert. Venedig ist sein drittes und letztes Ziel - und das erste, das Wasser als weiteres wichtiges Umweltelement einbezieht.

Entworfen von Littmann und realisiert von Schnetzer Puskas Engineers, besteht die Arena aus einer korb-ähnlichen, 7 Meter hohen transparenten Struktur aus Holzrahmen und -latten. Ihre gebogenen und gebeugten laminierten Balken sind oben durch einen Spannring und unten durch eine Stahl Spanngurt verbunden. Im Grundriss betrachtet repräsentiert die Gestaltung der Struktur und die innere Tribüne den Stamm eines Baumes im Profil mit seinem konzentrischen Muster der Jahresringe.

Was Klaus Littmann geschickt isoliert, kann momentan unsere Sichtweise auf die Welt neu ordnen. Der Künstler und Kurator hat Erfahrung darin, ein breites Publikum zu einer umfassenden Erfahrung einzuladen. Als Schattenspender oder als Gastgeber für Vögel und Insekten präsentiert sich sein kleines, temporäres Naturschutzgebiet als Sensation des Friedens.

„In seiner Blüte sehen wir einen Hoffnungsträger in ihm. Lässt er sein Laub fallen, denken wir über Vergänglichkeit nach. Der Baum ist Zeichen des Lebens, Stellvertreter für die Vielfalt der Arten und Zeuge für die Verletzlichkeit des globalen Ökosystems.“ sagt Klaus Littmann.
