3x3 house | KONTEXTUS

This house is a study plan which attempts to house all essential functions for an average family and fit them into the strict square layout. In ac­cordance with this goal I approached this issue as a grid system in which the layout could be suitable for a wide range of plot situations. Therefore, I divided the layout into 3x3 parts of 4.5 meters length and 4.5 meters wide elements, which provides place for all functions. These functions are consistently separated by the load bearing walls. The dining room is situated in the centre of the layout where the family usually spend time together regardless of the time of day. The kitchen and the living room are connected with the dining room, and these are surrounded by the bedrooms and bathroom in addition to the entrance hall. Concerning the outdoor areas, this grid system comprises the carpool at the entrance and the terrace which is accessible from the living room.

The load bearing structure is made from reinforced concrete. The four load bearing walls extend from the grid pattern and these edges of the walls contain the vertical drains. The concrete roof has a skylight in the centre of the grid section which allows natural light into the dining room. The material of the façade structure is left with a rough surface on which the wooden plank pattern from the construction is visible. In order to achieve balance between the exterior and the interior I strived to use wood in the interior places where it was feasible.
