“Domus Restoration and Preservation” International Prize, 9th edition 2023/2024, Built Projects Division - Ex Aequo Gold Medal

The church of Santa Maria Assunta in the Lamadacqua district, designed by Plinio Marconi together with his son Paolo (1958- 1963), presented extensive phenomena of early degradation, including structural damages, which revealed its intrinsic fragility. The intervention preserved the original material, resorting to minimal interventions that were neither corrective nor substitutive. The reinforcements of the reinforced concrete wall structures were made with new compatible materials, bringing the forms back to their original form. For the external plastered surfaces, which were heavily degraded and had already been replaced over the last few years, the designers worked with punctual reintegrations, avoiding diacritical signs that would have compromised the reading of an architecture characterised by organically continuous surfaces. The only details made recognisable are the imprints of the original truncated cone-shaped water collection tanks, which were not reconstructed. Reconstruction has been avoided. This was a restoration project that combined due respect for the authenticity of the material with the requirements of the architectural form. material, with the requirements of the architectural form.

La chiesa di Santa Maria Assunta in contrada Lamadacqua, progettata da Plinio Marconi unitamente al figlio Paolo (1958-1963), presentava estesi fenomeni di precoce degrado, anche strutturale, che ha fatto emergere una sua intrinseca fragilità. L’inter- vento ha conservato la materia originaria, ricorrendo a interventi minimi non corretti- vi o sostitutivi. I rinforzi delle strutture murarie in cemento armato sono stati realiz- zati con nuovi materiali compatibili, riconducendo le forme in quanto perfettamente desumibili dal testo stesso. Per le superfici intonacate esterne, fortemente degradate e già sostituite nel corso degli ultimi anni, si è operato con reintegrazioni puntuali evitando segni diacritici che avrebbero compromesso la lettura di una architettura ca- ratterizzata da superfici organicamente continue. Unici dettagli resi riconoscibili sono le impronte delle originarie vaschette tronco-coniche di raccolta delle acque, che si è rinunciato a ricostruire. Un intervento di restauro, questo, che ha saputo coniugare il dovuto rispetto dell’autenticità della materia, con le esigenze della forma architettonica.
