JAM Lisbon is the result of the renovation of an abandoned Lisbon office block showcasing collectible designs compatible with the OpenStructures modular grid. The project was led by interior architect and Zaventem Ateliers founder Lionel Jadot who employed a dozen or so local design studios using locally sourced building materials The first passive hotel in Portugal, the design approach focused on minimising energy consuming 90% less energy than a conventional building via minimum energy consumption, solar panels and passive heat recovery system from waste water. A variable modular project, comprising of 100 rooms, rooftop bar and pool with a ground floor coworking space and Mojjo restaurant serving traditional cuisine.

Instead of designing all these pieces himself, Jadot worked with a network of local Lisbon-based artisans including a tried and tested chair by Emmanuel Babled who designed a playful experiment with Jisamwe, a collective of Zanzibarian artisans. Other collaborating design partners include Mircea Anghel’s Cabana Studio who built modular lego-like bunk beds, Flowco eco-tile headboards made from recycled shoes and lobby concrete chairs and daybeds by Ivan Daniel Cova, bespoke furniture by Emmanuel Babled, Jisamwe collective, murals by Brazilian artist Ylana Yaari, terracotta tiles, inside and out, by Pieter Van Bruysse (of Grond studio) using lime plaster, cork waste and different clays.

The hotel’s Cabana rooftop lounge bar boasts stunning views and an oblong swimming pool lined with Bela Silva hand-painted tiles surrounded by handwoven plastic Tucurinca furniture by Omarcity, wooden ping-pong tables, and ceramic mask sculptures by artist duo Mon Colonel Spit. Lisbon’s oldest ceramic factory, Fabrica Sant’Anna also clad the rooftop bar ceiling using locally sourced raw cork.
