Inserted in the historic fabric of the city of Beja, this apartment is spread over three floors: the entrance floor contains only the staircase to the second floor, where there is a sequence of interconnected spaces - living rooms, kitchen and a bedroom and bathroom. On the second floor there is another bedroom and a small terrace with views over the historic city. The heart of the house is the living room, with a double view (northeast - southwest), suspended like a bridge over the public street, creating a covered walkway. This renovation project is based on an approach of simplifying the existing building, while respecting the typological and figurative characteristics of traditional Alentejo architecture. The interior is characterized by permanent light, reflected from the white walls of the surroundings: the light tones of the wall surfaces, doors and furniture, in contrast to the natural wood floors, offer a neutral atmosphere in which the light reverberates happily. In the living room, a singular element stands out from the white background of the walls: the new staircase leading to the second floor - a white volume suspended in the void and painted dark red inside. "A recognisable signature that, with its refined design and enthusiastic use of colour, elegantly and delicately points out the trace of the contemporary intervention on the pre-existing building."1 Ultimately, this restoration is a hymn to light and local colors, shaping a contemporary dwelling.

Inserido na malha histórica da cidade de Beja, este apartamento desenvolve-se em três pisos: o piso da entrada contém apenas a escada de acesso ao primeiro andar, onde se desenvolvem uma sequência de espaços interligadas - salas, cozinha e um quarto e instalação sanitária. No segundo piso existe mais um quarto e um pequeno terraço com vistas sobre a cidade histórica. O coração da casa é a sala de estar, com um vista dupla (nordeste – sudoeste), suspensa como uma ponte sobre a rua pública, criando nesta uma passagem coberta. Este projeto de renovação parte de uma abordagem de simplificação do existente, respeitando as características tipológicas e figurativas e da arquitetura tradicional alentejana. O interior é caracterizado por uma luz permanente, reflectida das paredes brancas da envolvente: os tons claros das superfícies das paredes, portas e mobiliário, em contraste com os pavimentos em madeira natural, oferecem uma atmosfera neutra sobre a qual a luz reverbera alegremente. Na sala de estar, um elemento singular destaca-se do fundo branco das paredes: a nova escada de acesso ao segundo andar - um volume branco suspenso no vazio e pintado no seu interior de vermelho escuro. “Um gesto reconhecível que, com o seu desenho claro e o uso entusiástico da cor, assinala com elegância e delicadeza o traço da intervenção contemporânea sobre o edifício pré-existente”.1 No fundo, esta recuperação acaba por ser um hino à luz e às cores locais, configurando um habitar contemporâneo.
