Quincho Bialet | Balsa Crosetto Piazzi

Quincho is the space where one of the most popular rites in Argentinian culture takes place: the rite of the barbecue. Cooking as a collective practice has an ancient history. It links humans with nature, with the process of lighting the fire, and with the primitive experience of cooking and sharing a meal within a community.

This Quincho is located in the small village of Bialet Masse, in an area between the Lake San Roque and the Cordoba Hills.

The project itself is conceived as a roof. The intention was to create a single, large room, with enough space and hierarchy to host the rite of large meals and reunions around a table. The slab is supported by the brick walls on both sides, which host small areas of restrooms and deposits that serve the main space for the cooking rite. Towards the interior, the brick walls get perforated in order to hold large spaces for grill where the fire will be lighted and the food will be cooked.

From a material perspective, Quincho is a concrete, non-speculative architecture that emerges as a technical result of the availability of resources and local craftsmanship. Walls of cut and sun-dried clay bricks and a lowcost, zero-maintenance roof of exposed prefabricated beams allow the roof to function as a large gutter capable of returning rainwater to the ground.

The reduction of details to the minimum, as well as the "unfinished" condition of the project, respond to an attitude of responsibility and common sense to face the economic and political challenges that the region has been facing in the last decades.

The trees are the backstage of this large room where the rite takes place; functioning as a natural enclosure for the Quincho and integrating it kindly with the natural ecosystem that surrounds it so as to become part of it.

Finally, the project has the aura of a climatic shelter. It offers protection from rain and sun, but it remains open, making possible the physical encounter with the nature of the Monte of Cordoba.

Quincho Bialet es un espacio creado para albergar el rito del asado. La obra se ubica en la pequeña localidad de Bialet Massé, en un sitio emplazado entre el Lago San Roque y las Sierras Chicas.

El proyecto es concebido principalmente como una cubierta. Esta se apoya sobre dos muros en cuyo espesor se albergan los servicios -sanitarios y depósitos- que sirven al espacio principal del rito del asado. Este espacio central es el objetivo principal del proyecto: un espacio de jerarquía, central en el proyecto, liberado y desprogramado. Se trata básicamente de una suerte de refugio para el encuentro colectivo, para la preparación de comidas con fuego, y para compartir con otrxs. No hay equipamiento alguno; tampoco cerramientos. Tan solo unos asadores, concebidos como huecos en los muros.

El ladrillo de los muros y el suelo, así como las viguetas prefabricadas de concreto utilizadas en la cubierta son materiales comunes en la construcción local, populares, de bajo costo y cero mantenimiento. Construir con ellos en un sitio como Bialet Masse es para nosotros una decisión de sentido común, ya que se trata de operar con lo disponible, tanto en términos materiales como en relación al “know-how” de los albañiles que construyen la obra. En otras palabras, el Quincho busca emplear técnicas y materiales hiper contextuales, de una manera que acerque el proyecto a diálogos y formas más abstractas. El interior de la cubierta queda “sin terminar”, dejando la estructura de viguetas a la vista. La losa funciona como un gran canalón de hormigón que recibe y transporta el agua de lluvia de vuelta al terreno. Toda la instalación eléctrica es exterior, evitando así calar el ladrillo. El suelo y las paredes se realizan con ladrillos fabricados artesanalmente, provenientes de un cortadero próximo a la obra. Los árboles son el fondo de este gran espacio que es el Quincho. El proyecto tiene el aura de un refugio; un espacio de encuentro con y dentro de la naturaleza del Monte de Córdoba.
