In addition to the building wayfinding system, we also implemented the car park signage for the Centre for Applied Aviation Research (ZAL) in Hamburg.
Car parks are often neglected when it comes to design, even though they are the main entrance for many people. And it is well known that first impressions count for a lot. So why not improve the aesthetics of car parks? Why not create an inviting atmosphere for people? Why not appeal to visitors before they even enter the actual destination?

On the ZAL site, we chose a more playful approach for the new wayfinding and orientation system. As in the foyer, cafeteria and auditorium areas, large arrows were used, especially in the multi-storey car park, which not only guide traffic but also allude to the architectural elements and the concept of take-off and landing. The visual language ensures a clear identity and a strong connection between employees and visitors and the research centre, and this becomes clear as soon as you arrive at the car park.

In the new car park of the ZAL users will always land on the right atmospheric level. The loose reinterpretation of typical runway signs not only lends identity to the parking levels and stairways, it also delivers a clear shift in perspective via a large wall graphic on the façade. The design approach developed for the central building of the research center is thereby continued and complemented by new visual elements.

Anyone who feels invited here, feels at home and in good hands will be happy to return and will generally have a lasting positive impression of the place they have visited.
