With a resolute "don't move, improve" ethos, McMahon and Mathews have transformed their dwelling into a versatile sanctuary, seamlessly blending aesthetics with the wellbeing of its inhabitants. Every element within Rufford Mews has been thoughtfully designed and made by the duo themselves, radiating their touch of craftsmanship. Flexibility, usefulness, and aesthetic appeal have been maximised in every corner, effortlessly catering to the dynamic needs of their growing family.

Rufford Mews also serves as an experimental zone, providing an opportunity to push the boundaries of design by testing new ideas and materials. Geometry, a perennial source of fascination for Mike weaves its way through the diverse array of materials found in Rufford Mews which come together in a tapestry of textures and forms.

What sets this residence apart, beyond the carefully considered material palette, is the fact that Mike and Jewlsy personally crafted the majority of the furniture and cabinetry themselves. From the cantilevered dining chairs that beckon guests to gather, to the dining table with its sunken fruit bowl — an inviting centrepiece that adds a touch of organic charm — birch plywood takes centre stage in the living area.

The pièce de résistance is the 40mm thick Dinesen Douglas Fir Sofa, seemingly floating on concrete pilotti cast in recycled rainwater pipes. Accompanied by a coffee table crafted from the same wood with undulating cork legs, these creations embody Mike’s sculptural design sensibility.

In the kitchen, concrete worktops and board-marked concrete side returns embrace sustainability with style. They were cast using recycled sandblasted Douglas fir boards from the roof garden of 4 Pancras Square, offering further opportunity for materials that were destined for a skip to be reused.

In the child's bedroom, Mike's playful spirit comes to life, with shutters on the bed providing privacy and creating a beguiling realm for imaginative games. Throughout the entire apartment, geometric patterns adorn walls and surfaces, injecting a vibrant energy that enlivens the space.

Stepping outside, the balconies have been transformed into verdant "Junglette" retreats, where fusion of nature and architecture captivates the senses. Carefully curated, these outdoor spaces boast a blend of exotic and native species. Standing as sculptural marvels, the tree ferns radiate their fronds outward, bestowing a touch of elegance upon the surroundings. Meanwhile, the artful dance of climbers weaving through the balcony railings adds a touch of enchantment, conjuring an illusion akin to a grand hanging basket from below.

These balconies offer a retreat of tranquillity amidst the bustling urban landscape. Here, the lush foliage not only brings beauty but also serves as a natural barrier, providing a sense of seclusion allowing quiet moments of reflection.

Rufford Mews is more than just a residence—it is a testament to the power of design, craftsmanship, and the tireless dedication of the residents. Through their enduring commitment, they have created a haven where form, function, and playfulness converge harmoniously.
