At national park the Hoge Veluwe (NL) lies an artistic incubator in the middle of nature: Buitenplaats Koningsweg. Dozens of artists and creative entrepreneurs live and work on this former barracks site. As part of a special project by the municipality of Arnhem, 11 folly's in the woods have been developed here as holiday stays. The central theme of the project is 'camouflage', in reference to the history of the site.

The folly's form a unique architectural experience that provides space for everyone to spend the night in the middle of nature. The starting point of the camouflage strategy is that the folly does not dominate both the Buitenplaats and nature but is a guest in the landscape. Nest merges into the forest high between the crowns of the trees. This gives a great sense of tranquillity and connection with nature.

Buitenverblijf Nest is a spectacular holiday home whose design refers to the archetypal image of a bird house. The folly is built with respect for nature, using high-quality materials that have little or no impact on human, animal and environmental health. Nest is a sustainable holiday home due to economical all-electric installations and a highly insulated building envelope. Energy is provided by solar panels on the high roof.

Perched on slender black legs and resolute in its volume, Nest is a surprisingly comfortable holiday home to stay in: you literally find yourself among the treetops looking out over the heathlands in complete privacy. You cannot experience the closeness to nature at this altitude anywhere better than here. The tiny house is not just a hidden hideaway for people. Nest is truly nature inclusive and also offers a fine abode to numerous birds, 'tree climbers' and insects.

With a birdhouse in mind, Nest is not an odd fit in the wooded landscape. The main volume is composed of three layers that increasingly stagger outwards. This creates extra space for nesting boxes in the facades. Behind the cladding, nuthatches, woodpeckers and bats can seek shelter. The black steel frame and plinth beams under the raised floor also provide shelter for nests.

On the first level, almost 8 meters above the ground, is the kitchen and living room. The terrace adjacent to this living level faces both morning and evening sun. Cupboard space and a compact kitchen have been cleverly incorporated here to make the use of space even more efficient. For example, part of the storage room is combined with a stairs cupboard, which then leads to the bathroom on the mezzanine floor. In the hood is a spacious bedroom area with one large 4-persons bed. Although the interior space has been reduced to a minimum, the experience of space is actually maximized by long sight lines and the clever interior layout. The large round windows and wall-to-wall sliding doors from the living room also offer breathtaking views of the surroundings.

Midden op de Hoge Veluwe ten noorden van Arnhem ligt een culturele enclave middenin de natuur: Buitenplaats Koningsweg. Op dit voormalig kazerneterrein wonen en werken tientallen kunstenaars en creatieve ondernemers. Als onderdeel van een bijzonder project van de gemeente Arnhem zijn hier in het afgelopen jaar 11 recreatieve verblijven (folly’s) in het bos ontwikkeld. Het centrale thema van het project was ‘camouflage’, als verwijzing naar de geschiedenis van de locatie.

De folly’s vormen een unieke architectonische ervaring die voor iedereen ruimte biedt om midden in de natuur te overnachten. Uitgangspunt van de camouflagestrategie is dat de folly’s zowel de Buitenplaats als de natuur niet domineren maar te gast zijn in het landschap. Buitenverblijf Nest gaat op in het bos tussen de kruinen van de bomen. Dit geeft een groot gevoel van rust en verbinding met de natuur.

Definitie 'Folly':

“Een folly is een niet-conventioneel bouwwerk dat een kunstzinnig of ludiek doel dient”. De term folly is overgenomen uit het Engels waar het dwaasheid betekent.”

Buitenverblijf Nest is een spectaculaire recreatiewoning die in z'n vormgeving verwijst naar het archetype beeld van een vogelhuis. De folly is met respect voor de natuur gebouwd met hoogwaardige materialen die in de totale levensloop weinig tot geen impact hebben op de gezondheid van mens, dier en milieu. Nest is een duurzaam vakantiehuis door de zuinige all-electric installaties en een zeer goed geïsoleerde bouwschil. Energie wordt geleverd door zonnepanelen op het hoge dak.

Hoog geplaatst op slanke zwarte poten en resoluut in z'n volumeopbouw is Nest een verrassend comfortabel vakantiehuis om in te verblijven: je begeeft je letterlijk tussen de boomkruinen in alle privacy uitkijkend over de heidevelden. De nabijheid van de natuur kun je op deze hoogte nergens beter ervaren dan hier. Het buitenverblijf is niet alleen een verscholen verblijfsplek voor mensen. Nest is écht natuur inclusief en biedt ook een fijne verblijfsplek aan tal van vogels, ‘boomklimmers’ en insecten.

Met een vogelhuis in je achterhoofd is Buitenverblijf Nest geen vreemde inpassing in het bosachtige landschap. Het hoofdvolume is opgebouwd in drie gevellagen die steeds verder naar buiten verspringen. Hierdoor ontstaat extra ruimte voor nestkasten in de gevels. Achter de gevelbekleding kunnen boomklevers, spechten en vleermuizen beschutting zoeken. Ook het zwart stalen frame en de plintbalken onder de verhoogde vloer bieden onderdak voor nesten.

Op de eerste woonlaag, bijna 8 meter boven de grond, bevindt zich de keuken en living. Het terras grenzend aan deze woonlaag is zowel op de ochtend als avondzon georiënteerd. Kastruimte en een compacte keuken zijn hier slim ingepast om het ruimtegebruik nog efficiënter te maken. Zo is een deel van de berging gecombineerd met een trapkast, die vervolgens leidt naar de badkamer op de tussenverdieping. In de kap bevindt zich een ruim slaapvertrek met één groot 4-persoons bed. Hoewel de binnenruimte tot een minimum is teruggebracht, is de beleving van ruimte juist gemaximaliseerd door lange zichtlijnen en de slimme indeling in het interieur. De grote ronde ramen en kamerbrede schuifpui vanuit de living bieden daarnaast een adembenemend uitzicht op de omgeving.
