The project seeks to preserve and enhance the dark, stony, secluded atmosphere, enveloped by the thick load-bearing walls of the plinth of a fine classical building in Madrid.
The walls are hard and rough, with large granite ashlars and solid brickwork. Some walls are covered with plaster and limewash paint (Bauwerk) and folded to form benches and shelves. The floor is paved with black volcanic stone, like a newly discovered terrain.
At the back of the space, a vaulted brick cave with small vaulted openings to the inner garden is painted in dark red.
This austere ambience is completed and 'elevated' by furniture and lighting pieces, which tend to either nuance or reinforce it.
In the entrance space, a large rounded counter made to measure in chestnut (Plantea) contrasts with the granite and the volcanic floor. The small tables in natural aluminium (Frama) offer a surface that vibrates in the warm light, and the birch stools (Frama) provide light and dynamic seating. Alabaster sconces (Siete Formas) and small lamps of recent or vintage design float on the walls, shelves and counter.
In the cave at the back, a large 10 cm thick solid granite table (Plantea) seems to have been there forever, waiting for a good meeting. Custom-made birch tables (Plantea) move easily around it, and the aluminium Tasca chairs (Frama) become satiny again in the light of the alabaster lamp (Santa & Cole) that illuminates the room from the center of the large table, with the only support of candles and small sconces.
The music, very well selected and played from the counter on vinyl, completes the atmosphere in the whole space.
The rough shelter of the building then envelops soft and refined elements, in dim and vibrant light and sound, where seclusion, solidity and permanence meet in balance with activity, spontaneity and constant change.
