Castle on the Coast of Barcelona | Rehab

In the Maresme area (Barcelona), a vineyard estate awaits with a 16th century castle, which after being closed for a few decades, has been rehabilitated for use as a unique family residence.

Rehab has been in charge of the new interior design and construction of the castle. This large manor house has an unmistakable profile, characterized by two towers that rise on both sides of the main façade.

The residence has recently undergone a series of consolidation works and currently its wine cellar (the estate's own production) proudly displays the original vaults of the building. The room, fresh and spacious, is currently inhabited by the barrels that keep the four presses company.

“We have partially rehabilitated everything that is the inner skin of the castle, since one of the owners' requests was to maintain its essence as much as possible,” they explain from Rehab. In this way, some walls and ceilings have 

been restored, to solve both the humidity and the degradation of the stone covering, as well as to promote an adequate distribution of spaces. The newly incorporated elements are only the floors, for which a natural stone brought from India has been carefully selected.

The solemnity of the building is reflected in some architectural details, such as the original main door, which dates back to 1577, whose arch is made up of 17 voussoirs characteristic of the constructions of the great houses of Catalonia. 

A stately interior design: antiques, exclusive design furniture and works of art

The new interior design designed by Rehab exudes all the respect that a large stately home deserves, where architecture and history are reflected in the original stones, walls and ceilings.
In this way, the skin of the building is nourished by natural materials: the original stone walls, the lime paint, the natural stone flooring and the oak wood ceilings.

The furniture includes restored antiques, which already belonged to the owners, along with some pieces designed exclusively for this project by the Rehab team. The color range of sofas, chairs, tables and textiles reflects the different colors of the vineyards and the wine produced on the estate.

It is worth highlighting the taste for art, which is present in all rooms. It has an important art collection from the Miquel Alzueta gallery, which includes pictorial works and sculptures by contemporary artists.

Importance of lighting to create different atmospheres

Lighting is an excellent ally to enhance the beauty of interior architecture and create atmospheres that invite calm. The project has been worked on in 3 different ways, with the collaboration of CA2L: general lighting, indirect lighting and creation of theatrical scenes.

The absence of natural light on the ground floor has conditioned the rooms, which is why different scenarios have been created, with very versatile environments. To achieve this, direct light has been used, through directable spotlights, indirect light through LED lighting and decorative lamps in the most significant corners.

Design fusion between industrial and traditional kitchen

On the other hand, the strength of the wine and gastronomic world reaches the kitchen. One of the client's requirements was that the main kitchen be industrial for use in family events, but on the other hand in the anteroom you will find a classic style display case in olive green with natural stone. bush-hammered so as not to lose the essence of its Catalan origins.

“For us, carrying out the rehabilitation of this castle has been an extraordinary experience, since we have managed to give life to a space that had remained uninhabited for several decades and that has made the challenge more special and beautiful” comments from Rehab.

En la zona del Maresme, en la província de Barcelona, se ubica una finca de viñedos que data del siglo XVI, con un distintivo castillo que, tras permanecer algunas décadas cerrado, ha sido rehabilitado para su uso como residencia familiar.

Rehab ha sido la empresa encargada de la reconstrucción y del nuevo diseño interior. Esta gran casa señorial luce un perfil inconfundible, caracterizado por dos imponentes torreones que se levantan a ambos lados de la fachada principal, enmarcando la entrada.

Profundo respeto por el pasado

En diferentes espacios de la residencia, se han realizado obras de mejora y consolidación.

Una de las más destacables es la de la bodega, que luce con orgullo las bóvedas originales del edificio y donde actualmente se realiza la producción 

vitícola propia de la finca. La estancia, fresca y espaciosa, está habitada por las barricas que hacen compañía a las cuatro prensas.

“Hemos rehabilitado de una forma parcial todo lo que es la piel interior del castillo, ya que una de las peticiones de los propietarios, era mantener su esencia al máximo” explican desde Rehab.

De este modo, con respeto y mesura, se han restaurado algunas paredes y techos, con el objeto de solventar problemas de humedad y degradación del revestimiento de piedra, pero también para favorecer una adecuada distribución de espacios.

Los elementos de nueva incorporación son únicamente los suelos, para los que se ha seleccionado cuidadosamente una piedra natural procedente de la India.

La solemnidad del edificio se plasma en algunos de sus detalles arquitectónicos, como en la puerta principal, original y datada de 1577, cuyo arco compuesto de 17 dovelas, es característico de la construcción de las grandes casas de Cataluña. 

Un interiorismo señorial: antigüedades, muebles de diseño exclusivo y obras de arte

El nuevo interiorismo diseñado por Rehab desprende todo el respeto y la sobriedad que merece una gran casa señorial, donde, además, la arquitectura y la historia conviven en las piedras, paredes y techos originales.

De este modo, la piel del edificio se nutre de materiales naturales: las paredes de piedra original, la pintura a la cal, el pavimento de piedra natural y los techos de madera de roble.

El mobiliario incluye desde antigüedades restauradas, perteneciente a los propietarios, hasta algunas piezas exclusivamente diseñadas por el equipo de Rehab para este proyecto.

La gama cromática de sofás, sillas, mesas y textiles refleja y arraiga los distintos colores y tonos propios de la finca, tanto de los viñedos como del vino que allí se produce.

Cabe destacar la consideración y apreciación del arte en este proyecto, que está presente en todas las estancias. Se cuenta con un importante fondo artístico de la galería Miquel Alzueta, que incluye obras pictóricas y esculturas de artistas contemporáneos.

Importancia en la iluminación para crear diferentes atmósferas

La iluminación es la excelente aliada para ensalzar la belleza de la arquitectura interior y crear atmósferas que invitan a la calma. El proyecto se ha trabajado de tres maneras diferentes, con la colaboración de CA2L: iluminación general, iluminación indirecta y creación de escenas teatrales.

La ausencia de luz natural en la planta baja ha condicionado las estancias, motivo por el cual se han creado diferentes escenarios con ambientes polivalentes. Para lograrlo se ha jugado con luz directa, a través de focos dirigibles, indirecta a través de iluminación led y lámparas decorativas en los rincones más significativos.

Fusión de diseño entre cocina industrial y tradicional

Por otra parte, la fuerza del mundo vinícola y gastronómico ha llegado del campo a la cocina.

Uno de los requisitos del cliente era que la cocina principal fuese industrial, para el uso en los eventos familiares pero, por otro lado, de la mano de GUD STUDI se ha diseñado una antesala donde encuentras una vitrina de estilo clásico en color verde olivo, con una piedra natural abujardada para no perder la esencia de sus orígenes catalanes.

“Para nosotros realizar la rehabilitación de este castillo ha sido una experiencia extraordinaria, ya que hemos conseguido despertar un espacio que había permanecido dormido y deshabitado durante varias décadas y eso ha hecho que el reto sea más especial y bonito” comentan desde Rehab.
