The project revitalizes a historic industrial site, once emblematic for its role in steel production, synonymous with Luxembourg’s world-renowned steel quality. At its core, a colossal 45-meter diameter cylinder once housed a high-speed fan, rapidly cooling ore from blast furnaces, enhancing steel hardness by over 30%. Abandoned for decades after facility dismantling, the site underwent extensive depollution efforts. Today, our project transforms this significant locale into a dynamic public space, honoring its industrial heritage. The preservation of the circular form of the sintering ponds and the innovative infinite loop ramp reflect our commitment to responsible heritage preservation. This transformative endeavor envisions a future seamlessly blending environmental consciousness with cultural sensitivity, breathing new life into a historic cornerstone of Luxembourg’s industrial legacy.

ENVIRONMENT INTEGRATION & SOCIAL RESPONSABILITY

The project seamlessly integrates into its environment, offering myriad benefits to the local community. Strategically positioned on a former industrial site in southern Luxembourg, the project redefines the space with meticulous consideration for historical context and environmental sustainability. The design prioritizes accessibility, inclusive public spaces, and the preservation of original infrastructure, enhancing social connectivity. Our approach aligns with the region’s industrial heritage while addressing contemporary community needs. The project becomes a symbol of responsible heritage preservation and sustainable urban development. Emphasis on green spaces, indigenous plants, and a water reservoir not only enhances aesthetics but contributes to the wellbeing of the local ecosystem, fostering a resilient and vibrant community hub.

USER EXPERIENCE

The Sinterbecken Square project ensures a high level of user experience through thoughtful design elements catering to diverse preferences. The terrace, the shops, the steps, and planting not only enhance aesthetics but also offer practical benefits, such as a potential fresh herb garden for the restaurant owner. The inclusion of a delivery area with guaranteed fire access ensures functionality and safety. The 200-meter loop provides a dynamic space for children to play, while parents can observe from the café terrace. This democratic and inclusive approach fosters a sense of community, allowing everyone to enjoy life in their own way. The adaptable nature of the project, with planned bar and restaurant spaces, ensures ongoing evolution to meet evolving needs while maintaining a usercentric focus.

ARCHITECURAL QUALITIES

Determined to maximize the existing heritage, which had previously been depreciated, the project exhibits distinctive architectural qualities, seamlessly merging historical preservation with contemporary functionality. The layout, featuring a visionary approach, preserves the circular form of the sintering ponds and connects different levels. This design not only respects the historical significance but also promotes a dynamic and inclusive public space. The decision to maintain the original concrete walls and beams demonstrates a commitment to heritage preservation and a sustainable, circular economy. Overall, the project’s architectural qualities lie in its ability to harmonize historical context with modern design principles, creating a unique and engaging urban space.

INTEGRATION AND IMPACT IN ITS ENVIRONMENT AND ON THE PUBLIC SPACE

Innovation in the project goes beyond adopting new technologies; it encompasses a holistic approach that values existing resources. Choosing not to start afresh but, instead, reusing what already exists reflects a commitment to building at a lower cost and with greater respect. This approach encapsulates the essence of innovation—making the most of the site, culture, and history. The project’s innovation lies in creating a real identity for a district with depreciated historical heritage, transforming it into an attractive and vibrant space. By prioritizing reuse and integration, the project innovatively redefines the conventional notion of progress, showcasing that true innovation encompasses sustainable practices, cultural preservation, and the revitalization of historical context
