House OO | TYarchistudio
Kaohsiung City / Taiwan / 2020
This project involved the transformation of a 40-year-old house into a modern living space that seamlessly integrates the homeowner's daily routines and activities through reconfigured spatial flow and layout. The design approach focused on three key aspects: 1. Abundant natural light, 2. Inviting natural materials, and 3. Open, continuous circulation.
By reconfiguring the existing staircase and mezzanine floor, the design reintroduced sunlight from the rear alley windows into the narrow, elongated townhouse. Skylights in the kitchen and children's playroom bathed the space in daylight. This project aimed to infuse every aspect of life into the perfectly scaled space, ensuring that each day brought interesting and scenic moments for the homeowners.
Starting from the window view at the entrance, where the reading sofa extends up to one meter and communicates visually with the parking area, to the dining table that exudes the aroma of Japanese cypress, which serves as an essential spot for the couple to enjoy daily meals. The open kitchen encourages the couple to prepare meals together regularly.
The magnetic painted glass on the corner platform of the staircase becomes an ideal canvas for the future children to draw and leave messages. The small viewing window in the staircase creates natural interaction between the children and their parents while increasing opportunities for natural lighting in the staircase area.
The master bedroom effectively separates the study from the bedroom with a wardrobe and utilizes frosted glass bricks to naturally filter the light, welcoming each new day with comfort. The exclusive dressing room, paired with a panoramic frosted bathroom window, allows ample daylight while maintaining privacy.
The rooftop children's playroom and living space borrow natural light from the sky, creating a comfortable atmosphere and providing a safe resting area. It also allows easy access through a relaxed pathway to the laundry area.
This is a health-conscious home that deserves close attention. Through natural ventilation, abundant daylight, and the use of comfortable wood materials, it provides a stable living environment for the homeowners and their family, creating many interesting memories in their daily life.
