Rosa Pavilion | Pezo Von Ellrichshausen

In its humble dimensions, this shelter occupies the only geographical inflection on the course of a harsh mountain river. Standing alone at the top of a small hillrock, there rests a platform with a slender column at its center. The platform is barely separated from the terrain by means of four thick columns placed at the middle point of every side. Not only static but seismic, the rotational stress of this concrete structure is controlled by crossed and diagonal beams embedded into the slab. There is a compressed room under this opaque platform, with a structural chimney at its gravitational core. Following the column order, two corners have fixed glass panels and the other two have sliding panels that can be left as open balconies. The interior can be understood as a hut lacking interiority, as a single room barely divided into four equivalent quadrants, with a minor variation given by a detached, monolithic staircase at one corner. Over the roof terrace, the chimney becomes the central pole of a rudimentary sundial (for an imaginary record of circular time). Thus, the experience of this place is bound to its double nature. Depending on the position under or over the artificial ground (a handmade horizon measured with water level), it might resonate with the carved or the aerial world, either cave or a cloud. Metaphors aside, the physical effort of climbing up the hill, at least for a foreign sightseer, should be compensated with an intimate meeting by the fire.

En de sus humildes dimensiones, este refugio ocupa la única inflexión geográfica en el curso de un abrupto río de montaña. Descansando en la solitaria cima de una pequeña colina, se eleva una plataforma con una esbelta columna en su centro, apenas separada del terreno mediante cuatro gruesos pilares colocados en el punto medio de cada uno de sus lados. La tensión rotacional de esta estructura de hormigón -no sólo estática sino también sísmica- está controlada por unas vigas cruzadas y diagonales incrustadas en la losa. Bajo esta plataforma opaca se dispone una sala comprimida con una chimenea estructural en su centro de gravedad. Siguiendo el orden dictado por los pilares, dos de las esquinas tienen paneles de vidrio fijos, y las otras dos, paneles deslizantes que admiten quedar como balcones abiertos. El interior puede ser entendido como una cabaña carente de interioridad, como una única habitación apenas dividida en cuatro cuadrantes equivalentes, con una leve variación dada por una escalera monolítica en una de las esquinas. Sobre el techo terraza, la chimenea se convierte en el poste central de un rudimentario reloj solar (para el registro imaginario de un tiempo circular). De este modo la experiencia de este lugar está atada a su doble naturaleza. Dependiendo de la posición bajo o sobre este suelo artificial (un horizonte hecho a mano mediante nivel de agua), podría resonar con el mundo excavado o el aéreo, con una cueva o una nube. Pero más allá de cualquier metáfora, el esfuerzo de subir la colina, al menos para un peregrino extranjero, se debería compensar con una reunión íntima junto al fuego.
