Places and landscapes create the background of our life experiences and can influence emotions, thoughts and behaviors. Designing a funeral home is a great responsibility: the moment of farewell is full of emotions and pain; spending this time in a positive habitat can be an instrument of comfort. The funeral home is located in an old small artisan workshop from the 1930s, which marks the corner of a block close to the centre of Trezzo sull'Adda, near the axis that connects the city cemetery with the church of Saints Gervasio and Protasio. The transformation project moves on two different tracks: on the one hand it tries to recover the public fronts with small silent interventions and, on the other, it transforms the internal courtyard into a secret garden, a contemplative space that marks the passing of time and seasons. Along the road, the building is rigorous and almost silent, punctuated by the repetition of the pillars and the positioning of the existing windows which are reduced to horizontal slits to protect themselves and guarantee maximum privacy. The new entrance anticipates the public use of the building, creating a threshold space covered in burnt larch wood that defines the passage between the outside world and the internal space, dedicated to contemplation and farewell. The linear body is organized with a service zone along the west side (street side) which holds the entrance, the toilet rooms, a small office and the distribution corridor, while all the other rooms open towards the garden thanks to large windows which emphasize the continuity and the relationship with the garden. The front towards the garden is redesigned by a new facade that shows the level of the internal horizon; 5 burnt larch wood frames fit into the regular pitch of the pilasters and, thanks to their thickness, mark the transition between the two worlds and regulate privacy and sunlight. The atmosphere inside is warm and essential thanks to the use of a plain and neutral palette of natural materials; a 2.40 m high horizon makes the space domestic and closer to the human scale. Inside the two funeral chambers and the large entrance hall, designed as a place for sharing, the ceiling becomes three-dimensional with soft vaults brushed by natural light. The burial chambers are made up of two adjoining rooms, a more intimate one dedicated to the display of the body and one where loved ones can rest; the limit is managed by a system of rotating walls in molded glass that allow you to experience the delicate moment in a flexible and personal way. The material choices, as well as the selection of the essences of the garden, help the user to immerse himself in a pure and almost ancestral state, in which the combination of natural and imperfect elements dialogues in balance with the measured rigor of the forms.

Luoghi e paesaggi costituiscono lo sfondo delle nostre esperienze di vita e possono influenzare le emozioni, i pensieri e i comportamenti. Progettare una casa funeraria è una grande responsabilità: il momento del commiato è ricco di emozioni e di dolore; trascorrerlo all’interno di un habitat positivo può essere strumento di conforto. La casa funeraria è ricavata all’interno di un piccolo laboratorio artigianale degli anni '30, che segna l’angolo di un isolato ai limiti del centro abitato di Trezzo sull’Adda, nei pressi dell’asse che collega il cimitero cittadino con la chiesa dei Santi Gervasio e Protasio. Il progetto di trasformazione si muove su due binari differenti: da un lato cerca di recuperare con piccoli interventi silenziosi i fronti pubblici e, dall’altro, trasforma il cortile interno in un giardino segreto, uno spazio contemplativo che segna lo scorrere del tempo e delle stagioni. Lungo strada l’edificio è rigoroso e quasi muto, scandito dalla ripetizione delle paraste e delle giaciture delle finestre esistenti che vengono ridotte a feritoie orizzontali per proteggersi e garantire la massima privacy. Il nuovo ingresso anticipa l’uso pubblico dell’edificio, creando uno spazio soglia rivestito in legno di larice bruciato che definisce il passaggio tra il mondo esterno e lo spazio interno, dedicato alla contemplazione e al commiato. Il corpo in linea è organizzato con una fascia di servizio verso ovest (lato strada) che accoglie l’ingresso, i locali igienici, un piccolo ufficio e il corridoio di distribuzione, mentre tutti gli altri ambienti si aprono verso il giardino grazie a grandi vetrate che enfatizzano la continuità e il rapporto con il giardino stesso. Il fronte verso il giardino viene ridisegnato da una nuova facciata che riprende la quota dell’orizzonte interno; 5 telai in legno di larice bruciato si inseriscono nel passo regolare delle paraste e, grazie al loro spessore, marcano la transizione tra i due mondi e regolano privacy e luce solare. L’atmosfera all’interno è calda ed essenziale grazie all’uso di una palette sobria e neutra di materiali naturali; un’orizzonte alto 2,40 m rende lo spazio domestico e più vicino alla scala umana. All’interno delle due camere ardenti e del grande salone d’ingresso, pensato come un luogo di condivisione, il soffitto diventa tridimensionale con morbide volte accarezzate dalla luce naturale. Le camere ardenti si compongono da due ambienti contigui, uno più intimo dedicato all’esposizione della salma e uno dove possono sostare i cari; il limite è gestito da un sistema di pareti rotanti in vetro stampato che permettono di vivere il delicato momento in maniera flessibile e personale. Le scelte materiche, così come la selezione delle essenze del giardino, aiutano il fruitore ad immergersi in uno stato puro e quasi ancestrale, nel quale l’accostamento di elementi naturali ed imperfetti dialoga in equilibrio con il rigore misurato delle forme.
