Casa do Pessoal | COM/O atelier

Located in Alto de São João cemetery in Lisbon, CASA DO PESSOAL has housed for several decades the crematorium workers’ changing rooms and a workshop for the maintenance of small elements of the cemetery. The existing building was in a very bad state of conservation and the spaces did not have the best conditions for their users.
 
It was interesting for us to understand how to design a building to serve the day life of living human beings that work and deal everyday with death. Inspired by bath spaces’ atmosphere and overlooking the river Tagus, this new space seeks to provide an escape for the cemetery workers' hard work day life and death environment. It is a building for life within death.
 
The clear structural rhythm of the existing building, a regular metric marked by the windows in the exterior facades, was maintained and reinforced and it defines the distribution of the interior spaces. In this sense, the existing facades and structural metric are maintained and the interiors and roof are altered. Service areas as well as the entrances to the building are located next to the main facades on both tops of the building, and it is in its center that the remaining interior spaces are organized.
 
The changing rooms and the staff service area, formerly located on the ground floor, with poor health conditions, were moved to the first floor, with access from the highest street level, and the workshop and warehouse were relocated to the ground floor with access from the lowest street level. A third floor was added at the roof level to house the staff service area with a small kitchen and a common space that extends to the exterior throughout a terrace from where it is possible to see the river Tagus. The changing rooms are designed and organized in a central rectangular "box" away from the existing side facades in order to allow circulation around it. This box is transposed to the configuration of the new volume on the third floor.
 
The new intervention both inside and outside is covered with white tiles in order to distinguish it from the existing remains of the building. The translucent glass in the interior doors and windows recreates the steam atmosphere of bath spaces. The transparent glass of the remaining windows allow visual contact with the exterior as well as natural light to enter the interior of the building. In order to mark the vertical connection between floors, a skylight is located between both changing rooms, crossing the entire building. The blue glass of this skylight resembles the stained glass windows in most of the tombs in the cemetery.

Inserida no cemitério do Alto de São João em Lisboa, a CASA DO PESSOAL, alberga desde há várias décadas os balneários dos trabalhadores do crematório e uma oficina destinada à manutenção de pequenos elementos do cemitério. O edifício existente encontrava-se em muito mau estado de conservação e os espaços não apresentavam as melhores condições para os seus utilizadores.
 
O principal desafio seria desenhar um edifício para pessoas “vivas” que trabalham e lidam com a morte todos os dias. Procurou-se evocar a atmosfera dos espaços de banho e tirar partido da vista sobre o rio Tejo de modo a conceber um lugar que fosse um refúgio para os duros dias de trabalho em contacto com a morte. A Casa do Pessoal é portanto um edifício para a vida em contacto com a morte.
 
Optou-se por manter e reforçar a clareza do ritmo da estrutura do edifício, uma métrica regular pontuada pelos vãos nas fachadas exteriores, tirando partido dela para a definição e distribuição dos espaços no interior do edifício. Neste sentido, as fachadas e a métrica estrutural existentes são mantidos e o interior e a cobertura alterados. As áreas respeitantes a serviços e às antecâmaras de entrada no edifício localizam-se em duas faixas junto às fachadas principais em ambos os topos do edifício, e é ao centro que se organizam os restantes espaços interiores.
 
Passaram-se os balneários e a área de serviço do pessoal, outrora localizados no piso 0, semienterrado e com escassas condições de salubridade, para o piso 1, com acesso pela rua localizada à cota mais alta, e do espaço da oficina e armazém, que se encontravam no Piso 1, para o Piso 0, com acesso pela rua à cota mais baixa. Acrescentou-se ainda um terceiro piso ao nível da cobertura que contém uma copa e uma zona comum que se prolonga para o exterior através de um terraço que abraça o espaço interior e de onde se avista a encosta da colina de Lisboa até ao rio Tejo. Os balneários masculino e feminino são desenhados e organizados segundo uma “caixa” rectangular afastada das fachadas laterais existentes de modo a permitir a circulação no seu entorno. Esta caixa é transposta para a configuração do novo volume na cobertura.
 
Optou-se por revestir a azulejo a nova intervenção quer no interior quer na cobertura do edifício distinguindo-a do existente. Os vãos interiores comportam vidros translúcidos, aludindo à atmosfera proporcionada pelo vapor que caracteriza os espaços de banho. Os restantes panos de vidro são transparentes permitindo o contacto com o exterior e a entrada de luz natural no interior do edifício. De modo a assinalar a ligação vertical entre todos os pisos, localizou-se uma claraboia no ponto de contacto entre o balneário feminino e masculino que atravessa todo o edifício. O vidro que a fecha na cobertura é percorrível e na cor azul, assinalando a memória dos vitrais que existem na maioria dos jazigos do cemitério.
