Purchased in 2015, the preexisting residence, originally built in 1893, had unfortunately turned dilapidated due to years of use as a former meth site. Derrick had the residence demolished in order to make way for the new, modern design by Sparano + Mooney Architecture.
By committing to making the 2,000-square-foot home uniquely his own, Derrick rejected several conventional ideas, such as designing multiple unnecessary rooms. With just one room for himself and his dog, Pearl, the adjacent spaces serve as multi-purpose areas for all to enjoy, such as the pool house, yoga studio and guest suite.
The primary design goal was to immerse the home into the surrounding landscape so that trees are in view whether one is laying in bed reading a book or brushing their teeth.
Interior and decor choices ranged from antiques, including a pair of Italian crystal chandeliers and a 19th-century Gothic wardrobe, to modernist pieces like a low-slung sectional from Molteni & C and Wishbone chairs by Hans J. Wegner. Accessories include succulents in weathered pots, antlers, mismatched brass candlesticks, a skull and crystals.
