Deriving its name from the Sanskrit word for "open space" and “sky”, Camp Sarika by Amangiri - launching 1 July 2020 – sits on its very own 55-hectare patch of wilderness in the heart of Utah’s canyon-slotted desert. Surrounded by towering mesas and rusted sands, the secluded hideaway offers a private outdoor experience,
comprised of 10-canvas topped pavilions and a central pavilion with a lounge, restaurant, spa and swimming pool. Offering a connection with nature that leaves city-life a distant memory, Camp Sarika’s design has been developed in timeless-tune with its inspiring environment; subtle and elegant. It forms an architectural statement as the first year-round camp of its kind in North America.

Tented Pavilions

Camp Sarika’s 10 tented pavilions have been designed by San Francisco and Johannesburg-based international design and development services firm, Luxury Frontiers. Created bespoke for Aman, the structures have been carefully crafted to ensure a seamless aesthetic connection between the architecture and surrounding landscape, while providing a safe solace from the elements. Balancing form and function, they bow towards the sandstone formations and are covered in soft canvas which is able to handle up to 12 tons of snow.

Evenly divided between one- and two-bedrooms, the tented pavilions are each equipped with an individual private plunge pool, indoor and outdoor living, dining area and bar area, as well as en-suite bathrooms with a bathtub and an indoor and outdoor shower. In keeping with the design ethos of Amangiri, each pavilion is comfortably spacious (one-bedroom at 175 square metres and two-bedroom pavilions at 262 square metres) with clean lines, natural colours, textures and materials inspired by the rolling plains of the desert.

Subtly different to nearby Amangiri, Camp Sarika’s interior décor includes canvas walls and ceilings with soft wooden fittings as opposed to Amangiri’s contrasting blackened steel and stone. Custom designed walnut and leather furniture creates a sophisticated desk area, while etched timber headboards echo the carved surroundings, suspended from soft leather straps. Additional furniture pieces include those from Nanimarquina, Annie Selke, Christian Liaigre, My Home Collection, Marset, Dedon, COR, and River Wood Mills to name a few. Meanwhile outside – accessed via sliding doors, the architectural design captivates; cleverly creating intimacy within a vast landscape. A shaded deck allows for an uninterrupted connection between outdoors and in. Each pavilion has its own private pool and firepit for lazy afternoons complete with sunbeds, fireside furniture and telescopes.

Central Pavilion

Camp Sarika’s central pavilion houses an arrival area, as well as a restaurant, spa, lounge, pool and Jacuzzi. Designed by New York-based Selldorf Architects, the building seamlessly anchors to the environment. Paying homage to its neighboring sanctuary, Amangiri, the main building is designed with minimalism in mind, where simple concrete blocks blend effortlessly into the rock.

On entering, a breathtaking art installation by internationally acclaimed artist Maya Lin titled Wahweap, welcomes guests. Inspired by tracing the shape of water as it travels from nearby Lake Powell to Lake Mead, the piece is created in glass marble, while open fireplaces and earthy materials further connect the building to

its surroundings. Leading through to an expansive outdoor terrace, the pool area has been designed with pockets of shaded daybeds for escaping the midday sun and a heated jacuzzi for relaxing at dusk. With endless views, this is a truly spectacular place to both relax and reconnect amid Utah’s sweeping desert. The restaurant offers both indoor and alfresco seating, surrounded by fire pits, further encouraging an immersion in nature.

Ideal for those seeking a contemplative and rejuvenating stay, Camp Sarika by Amangiri is a truly one-of-a- kind design, where refined tented pavilions work in harmony with the environment the camp inhabits, offering a secluded sanctuary in a remote location like no other.
