Located in the heart of the city of Madrid, SRS STUDIO designs ORIBU BRASAS JAPOCASTIZAS, a restaurant symbolizing the blend of Japan's ancient traditions and Madrid's “castizo” authentic culture. Its name, "Oribu," is derived from the Japanese term for the Spanish olive tree, capturing this cultural fusion.

Spread over three levels, Oribu has various distinct spaces. The ground floor boasts the primary entrance and a bar, while an elegant staircase leads to the first floor which houses the initial dining area and kitchen. A two-section, 8m high staircase connects this level to the basement, and its centerpiece is a metal mesh artistry reminiscent of ember smoke, accented by hanging lamps. The basement itself offers a second dining zone with a striking wine cellar, a VIP section for exclusive events, and sophisticated restrooms preceded by a refined anteroom.

The task at hand was daunting: craft an environment that genuinely represents the richness of both Japanese and Madrid cultures. Every aspect, from the bar and bottle racks to tables fitted with natural charcoal Japanese barbecues, was designed with utmost precision. The added challenge was maintaining the structure's original 1800s architecture while infusing modern elements without losing its genuineness. The goal was to seamlessly blend tradition and modernity.

The design inspiration stems from two primary sources. Firstly, the symbolic olive tree of Spain and Japan's ancestral ember tradition. Material choices like Yakisugi wood, natural stone, and marble echo this inspiration, constructing a visual tale of the intertwined cultures. The second layer of inspiration is drawn from the outlines of Mount Fuji and the Japanese aesthetic, reflected in massive stone murals. Meanwhile, the building's historical wooden walls were kept and strengthened, giving a nod to Madrid's authenticity. The juxtaposition of Japanese minimalism and Madrid's essence set the tone for the interior design.

The result is a multi-faceted sensory delight that is Oribu. Each feature, from the upside-down hanging olive tree and the ceiling-high bottle rack to the walls inspired in Mount Fuji's shapes, narrates a tale. The design doesn't just appeal visually, but also enhances functionality. The unique VIP areas, the clay-covered restrooms, and the barbecue-integrated tables all ensure a memorable Oribu visit. It stands as a haven of culture, gastronomy, and design, presenting a sensory trip to Japan while grounding visitors in Madrid's traditions. A mesmerizing experience guests are encouraged to relive repeatedly.
