The brief was to achieve a timeless feel throughout the house and to create warm and generous spaces to entertain large groups of family members. The house was originally built in 1926 and many significant features had been lost through subsequent modifications. The original ink drawings showed a larger siting room with a central fireplace, which we restored and expanded to provide a larger space for formal and informal entertaining. The house was expanded to incorporate the existing garage and a new rear extension was added. The existing plans have been completely subverted and a new staircase with a 7m high wall for displaying art was introduced. The void between this wall and the floor plates creates a dramatic insertion in the house and connect modern and revisited traditional interventions throughout.
