Blue lagoon

The residence is located in a secluded bay at Plaka, Apokoronas, Chania. Within the rocky terrain of the area, the underground, longitudinal building is formed parallel to the topography seemingly floating just above the sea. The main aspiration was the integration to the unique landscape, while maintaining a dynamic, architectural character. Thus, only two slabs become clearly visible, underlining the linearity of the construction, laying in between the emblematic rocks found in the plot. Obeying this strict geometry, all spaces are developed linearly facing east, while the imprint of the residence is minimized at the same time.

The ground floor slab follows the relief designed as an arc that incorporates the exterior landscaping ending at a geometric shaped pool area. The water element at the edge of the cliff is in direct dialogue with the sea providing 1800 view to the visitor. In contrast to the rocky landscape, the façade is light, entirely made of glass and can open along its entire length. Moreover, the flat roof is planted with indigenous plants enhancing the residence’s bioclimatic characteristics and integration into the surrounding area. The entrance to the residence is via a ramp slowly descending from the parking area to the lower level where the building is shaped on the edge of the slope. As a consequence, the residence is in exceptional contact with the sea offering an unlimited view of the horizon.
