THE TANK | Soritana Architects

Located in the heights of the city of Oaxaca de Juárez, "The Tank" is a project of architectural acupuncture and specific intervention on a pre-existence dedicated to the hotel industry, which seeks through the creation of a habitat designed as a container for a space compact, cozy and functional, meeting the needs of travelers who visit the city for limited periods of time, and who spend most of the day getting to know it without having the need to be in the room during the day, which is why they require a minimum functional space that provides the necessary services to rest, store your belongings and execute the basic operations of a normal room.

The element lands and is attached to an existing terrace within the complex, seeking to expand, in an innovative and simplified way, the possibilities of tourist living.

Like a “machine”, the tank has a circular container shape that is conceived with an infinite skin and structure, without corners, edges or changes of direction, so with a continuous and cylindrical layout it proposes deconstructing the interior of the space to delimit the partitions strategically within the concentric-radial shape, resulting in a bedroom comfortably for two people with luggage storage at the bottom of the bed, recycling the excess space, in addition, it has a desk and removable work area designed To make the area more efficient and expand when required, a small closet and bathroom with all services.

In a sculptural way, the element is integrated into the preexistence of the complex considering its scale, composition and original design, however, it was proposed to deliberately contrast it through the cylindrical shape and materiality, which, through a metal panel, covers with a skin on the structure, resulting in an exterior appearance of the cabin that contrasts with the original rooms of the property, projecting its own character.

Inside, materials and elements such as polished concrete, formwork wood for the ceilings, paint in various colors, wooden furniture and lighting are rescued from the original design.

It is through a new connection created by a metal walkway, which goes from the original building to the access of the capsule and reaching the height of the last level of the building, which allows reaching the tank, in addition, the experience of appreciating the treetops in the patios, the vegetation, the context of the city and a series of visual, artistic, historical, natural and sensory stimuli, generating a unique experience for users.

At Soritana Arquitectos we consider constant experimentation to be appropriate that analyzes and contemplates the different current demands of the living of current and future generations, to create solutions through a rationalized architectural composition that satisfies the needs of all.
