Naught Gin

Fusing tradition and innovation, Naught Gin's venue is a reflection of the bold and sophisticated flavours of their gin. Taking inspiration from the complex botanical flavour profile, Studio Y was inspired to create a sophisticated speakeasy with the concept of escapism and fantasy.

Inspired by nature and the luxurious experience of drinking a well-mixed cocktail, the space was created to be multi-layered and complex, but sophisticated. The interiors feature strong copper elements, inspired directly by the gin tanks and the distillery process, and contrasted with deep velvets and botanical wallpaper. Rough elements ensured there was an element of earthiness, with specialty paint finishes expertly applied by Scanlan & Makers, stone cladding applied to the bar, and a dry flora and fauna installation which hangs centrally in the space, designed by Edward & I. Luxurious velvets and textural elements call to nature and create an ambient immersive space that feels elegant but low-key.

At the heart of the design is not only our creative direction, but also the clients gin. The project highlights the most important detail, the gin distillery process and the emphasis Naught Gin place on creating a high-quality product. Studio Y wanted to create a space to showcase our clients creations, and accentuate their product by calling on elements of their process, and reworking it into the language of interior design. Studio Y were focussed on creating an immersive space that allows visitors to be encompassed entirely by the earthy, sultry experience of sipping on a curated cocktail as we believe visitors want to feel impacted by their surroundings when they visit venues.

Being a local brand, it was critical for us to focus on local materiality. The floral installation that is central to the venue was designed using local flora and fauna to represent the Australian origin of the gin, whilst also symbolising the gin creation process. Although Eltham has a charming village feel, the location of the speakeasy situated away from that village, provides an opportunity to contribute to the broader commercial industrial zone of Eltham.
