Les Courcelles | naturehumaine [architecture+design]

The site invested by the project was originally composed of two unified lots. The first lot was mainly used as a parking throughout the years. The second lot was occupied by two two-story buildings. Between the two buildings, there was a small garden with two large birch trees, like a "courcelle".

Two principles therefore guided the design of the project: the dual character of the site with these two lots and the typology of the "courcelle", a small courtyard, a gap between two spaces. of the courtyard we call “Courcelle” defined as a small courtyard, a gap between two spaces or a small garden.

The project occupies the two lots and is inscribed on the street by filling the void of the existing façade. It seeks to fit discreetly into the urban fabric while respecting the proportions and scale of the buildings in the immediate neighborhood.

The choice of a contrasting materiality distinguishes the two volumes, remnants of the division of the two existing lots: a brown clay brick covers the new building, while a grey Saint-Marc stone dresses the existing building. This stone takes up the composition of the façade cladding of the original building. The contrast of materials enhances the characteristics of the two segments and preserves the parcel unity of the street. The volumetry of the Courcelles aims at a harmonious integration into the existing built environment by the simplicity of its construction and its parcel morphology. The whole, while bringing a contemporary touch to the district by the current reinterpretation of the modest architectural details specific to the sector.

Articulated around the Courcelles, the living spaces breathe and reflect the organization of the lots of the time with their balconies, staircases and gardens. They are visually and physically connected by open walkways overhanging double-height spaces. The Courcelles are supplied with light through a large, long roof breakthrough, allowing light to penetrate to the core of the house.

Developing on each level of the house, from the basement to the mezzanine, these Courcelles are intended for different uses. The first Courcelle is installed at the back of the house and is translated by an English courtyard offering light and vegetated spaces to the basement spaces. It connects the garden and the street through the carriage porche, which offers a "service courtyard" to the house.

A third Courcelle, this one interior, opens like an atrium within the heart of the house, containing the dining room and the vertical stairway to the second floor and mezzanine. This circulation distributes two other Courcelles; the first one, translated by a footbridge suspended above the dining room and the living room. The second is translated by an exterior terrace, opens to the interior of the lot, facing the house and the garden. This wide terrace is bordered by a wall embracing it. It winds from the mezzanine to this terrace offering to the volumetry a certain dynamism. It allows to make this terrace more intimate by breaking the different vis-à-vis with the neighbors. Finally, we find on the mezzanine an office leading to the last Courcelle. This one opens towards the sky and brings visual serenity and direct light to the office space, framed by its sloping walls.

Le site investi par le projet était originalement composé de deux lots unifiés. Le premier lot a principalement été utilisé comme stationnement à travers les années. Le deuxième lot était occupé par deux bâtiments de deux étages. Entre les deux bâtiments, se trouvait un petit jardin avec deux grands bouleaux, comme une ‘’courcelle’’.

Deux principes ont donc guidé la conception du projet : le caractère double du site avec ces deux lots et la typologie de la ‘’courcelle’’, petite cour, interstice entre deux espaces. 

Le projet vient occuper les deux lots et s’inscrit sur la rue en comblant le vide du développé de façade existant. Il cherche à s’insérer discrètement dans la trame urbaine en respectant les proportions et l’échelle des bâtiments du quartier.

Le choix d’une matérialité contrastée vient distinguer les deux volumes, vestiges de la division des deux lots existants : une brique d’argile brune recouvre le nouveau bâtiment, tandis qu’une pierre grise Saint-Marc habille le bâtiment existant. Cette pierre reprend la composition du revêtement de façade du bâtiment originel. Le contraste des matériaux réhausse les caractéristiques des deux segments et préserve l’unité parcellaire de la rue. La volumétrie des Courcelles vise une intégration harmonieuse dans le cadre bâti existant par la simplicité de sa facture et par sa morphologie parcellaire. Le tout, en apportant une touche contemporaine au quartier par la réinterprétation actuelle des détails architecturaux modestes propres au secteur. 

Articulés autour des Courcelles, les espaces de l’habitation respirent et reflètent l’organisation des lots de l’époque avec leurs balcons, leurs escaliers et leurs jardins. Ils sont connectés visuellement et physiquement par des passerelles ouvertes surplombants des espaces en double hauteur. Les Courcelles sont alimentées en lumière par une large percée longiligne au toit, permettant à la lumière de pénétrer jusqu’au noyau de la maison. 

Se développant à chacun des niveaux de l’habitation, du sous-sol à la mezzanine, ces Courcelles sont destinées à différents usages. S’installant à l’arrière de l’habitation, la première Courcelle est traduite par une cour anglaise offrant lumière et espaces végétalisés aux espaces en sous-sol. Elle met en relation le jardin et la rue par l’intermédiaire de la porte cochère, celle-ci offrant une ‘’une cour de service’’ à la maison. 

Une troisième Courcelle, celle-ci intérieure, s’ouvre à l’image d’un atrium sur la hauteur du bâtiment. En son cœur s’installe la salle à manger de l’habitation ainsi que la circulation verticale distribuant le deuxième étage et la mezzanine. Cette circulation distribue deux autres Courcelles, une première traduite par une passerelle suspendue au-dessus de la salle à manger et du salon. Une seconde est traduite par une terrasse extérieure, ouverte vers l’intérieur du lot, faisant face à la maison ainsi qu’au jardin. Cette large terrasse est bordée par un mur l’embrassant. Il s’enroule depuis la mezzanine jusqu’à cette terrasse offrant à la volumétrie un certain dynamisme. Il permet de rendre plus intime cette terrasse en brisant les différents vis-à-vis avec les voisins. Enfin, on retrouve en mezzanine un bureau suspendu s’ouvrant sur une dernière Courcelle. Celle-ci s’ouvre vers le ciel, cadrée par ses murs en pente, elle apporte sérénité visuelle et lumière directe à l’espace du bureau.
