Le Paquebot | naturehumaine [architecture+design]

Located in the Côte-des-Neiges borough in Montreal, Le Paquebot project is part of an urban fabric strongly influenced by the architecture of the 1930s, from which it draws its name and its architectural style. Indeed, the “streamliner style”, which is associated with the art deco movement, was influenced by the nautical technological advances of the interwar period. It is characterized by the use of rounded corners, symmetry, sober and refined lines as well as the addition of multiple terraces.

The project consists of a semi-detached duplex with a ground layout of 24 feet by 25 feet for each housing, distributed over 3 floors + mezzanine. Le Paquebot is located on a narrow plot where existed a swimming pool serving a neighbouring building. Surrounded on three sides by multi residential buildings dating from the 1950s, the duplex brings a spark of novelty to the immediate surrounding.

Wishing to stand out from the rather dull and monolithic neighbours, the new building relies on a more playful language articulated by games of curves, particularly at the level of the exterior walls and roofs.

The client's desire was to offer 2 large family housing units (2100 ft2) with a car port including 4 bedrooms, an office space and a family room. The unit layout was thought creating a real "family cocoon" where the functional and bright spaces open onto the outside by giving, among other things, access to two generous terraces.

The house is organized on four distinct levels; a basement with a bedroom, a family room, the ground floor with common areas, the children's floor with two bedrooms and the mezzanine which is reserved for the parents. All spaces are organized around a central staircase leading to a large terrace on either side of the two units, one benefiting from the light coming from the East and the other from the West.

All the facades are clad in red clay brick while the curved roofs of the mezzanines are covered in steel painted wine red. The railings of the terraces and the privacy screens around the windows are modulated in perforated steel painted terracotta. In addition, a meticulous work of masonry equipment in a vertical tiling pattern is put forward at the 2 front corners of the duplex.

Situé dans un quartier de l’arrondissement Côte-des-Neiges-Notre-Dame-de-Grâce à Montréal, le projet Le Paquebot s’insère dans un tissu urbain fortement influencé par l’architecture des années 30, d’où il tire son nom et sa facture architecturale. En effet, le « style paquebot », que l’on rattache au mouvement art déco fut influencé par les avancées technologiques nautiques de l’entre-deux guerres.  Il se caractérise par l’usage de coins arrondis, de symétrie, de lignes sobres et épurées ainsi que par l’ajout de multiples terrasses.

Le projet consiste en un jumelé avec une implantation au sol de 24 pieds par 25 pieds pour chacun des logements, réparti sur 3 étages + mezzanine. Il est situé sur une parcelle étroite où se trouvait auparavant une piscine desservant un immeuble voisin. Le duplex rafraichi le contexte par sa nouveauté, cerné sur ses trois côtés par des constructions de 4 étages datant des années 1950.

Le nouveau bâtiment mise sur un langage ludique articulé par des jeux de courbes notamment au niveau des murs et de la toiture. Il souhaite ainsi se démarquer de l’aspect plutôt monobloc de ses voisins immédiats.

La volonté du client était d’offrir des unités d’habitation spacieuses (2100 pi2) comprenant 4 chambres à coucher, un espace de bureau, une salle familiale et un espace de stationnement couvert. Leur aménagement a été pensé de manière à créer de véritables « cocons familiaux » où les espaces fonctionnels et lumineux s’ouvrent vers l’extérieur en donnant accès à deux généreuses terrasses.

La maison s’organise sur quatre niveaux distincts ; un sous-sol avec une chambre, une salle familiale, le rez-de-chaussée avec les espaces communs, l’étage des enfants avec deux chambres et la mezzanine, réservée aux parents. L’ensemble des espaces s’organise autour d’un escalier central menant à une grande terrasse sur chacun des flancs latéraux des 2 unités du duplex, l’un profitant de la lumière venant de l’est et l’autre de l’ouest.

L’ensemble des façades est habillé de brique rouge d’argile tandis que les toitures courbes des mezzanines sont couvertes d’acier peint couleur rouge vin. Les gardes corps des terrasses et les écrans d’intimités au pourtour des fenêtres sont tous modulés en acier perforé peint couleur terracotta. De plus, un travail minutieux d’appareillage de maçonnerie en motif de carrelage verticale est mis de l’avant aux 2 coins avant du duplex.
