This kitchen extension was designed for a couple and their three children. Important to the design was to create a generous open plan space that is bright, relaxed and characterful. The kitchen is the main space of the house for the family’s day to day living as well as host the many gatherings for family and friends.

The kitchen space is formed by a single pitched roof with patent glazing skylight. The ceiling was made as high as possible to maximise the sense of light and space. On the garden side is a generous window seat with an large panel of glass connecting you to the garden.

We sought to turn the challenge of accommodating an existing bathroom above into an attribute. We took this as an opportunity to create a volumetric interest to the ceiling while also providing a threshold as a point of entry from the rest of the house.

In addition to the kitchen, we accommodated a coat storage as well as laundry room, discretely tucked behind a sliding door. The larder, refrigerator and kitchen storage are hidden behind a set of doors in white to blend in with the walls.

The flooring is a reclaimed chevron oak matching the rest of the house. In the area by the sink and oven are Moroccan cement tiles. The kitchen units are made of timber with an expressive grain in contrast to the white and pearl splash-back tiles.
