House in Praia Grande | Atelier Data

Integrated in the national park of Sintra-Cascais, the house is located near the Praia Grande beach, in Rodízio, Colares.

The project aims to build the space (of the house) from the void created between the pine trees, based on the idea of fusion/alliance between the built element and the natural space.

The starting point – the existing pine trees – generated a volumetric composition of different volumes, where each of these volumes corresponds to different types of usage. Its disposition on the ground takes into account the sun orientation, the topography and the position of the trees (that were meant to keep) providing, at the same time, a system of visual relations with the Serra de Sintra - located to the east.

The volumes are strategically organized around a central empty clearing which receives the water plane (swimming pool) and is marked by it, creating a controlled space dominated by nature that invites the family to inhabit the outside, where the inclined roofs of the different volumes converge.

The need to release/lift the volumes from the ground – given the porous and permeable consistency of the terrain – contributed, in addition, to the organicity of the built composition, whose suspension of the elements is reinforced by the vegetation that develops under them.
From a landscaping point of view, the challenge then focused on maintaining the existing pine forest, aiming to enhancing it as a cohesive element that acts as a usable garden and scenery for the interior of the house.

PROGRAMMATIC DISTRIBUTION

Programmatic wise, the house has a parking area; a service area where the laundry, pantries, kitchen (both backstage and social spaces) and washroom are located; a social area that absorbs, in a single space, the living room, dining area and piano room; three bedrooms, one of them for flexible use (office); and, finally, the technical areas that are located under the living room, taking advantage of the uneven terrain and suspension of the volume.

MATERIAL OPTIONS

The house incorporated materials that ensured a raw and, somehow, rough appearance, in line with the project’s organicity, without failing, however, to distinguish itself as a mass built in dialogue with the surroundings.

The volumes are covered on the outside by fluted metal sheets, finished with a grayish projected cork whose texture, shape and tone provide a natural and irregular appearance (matching the verticality and presence of the pine trees), facilitating the flow of raining water towards the ground. At the same time, this facade composition ensures, right at the start, a good thermic and acoustic insulation.

Glass surfaces emerge around the outside clearing, from which visual relations between the indoor and outdoor are established. On these glazed surfaces, that make up the distribution walkways, continuous wooden shutters are placed providing a warm and comfortable atmosphere, visible from the inside, filtering the intense sun exposure towards south.

Wood is also introduced in the interior, appearing on the doors, carpentries and ceilings. In the big living room – the main area of the house – its presence is enhanced by the creation of a coffered ceiling which, in addition to guaranteeing the acoustic performance of the space, promotes a truly special and particular ambience.

All the floors and interior walls are finished in light gray microcement, whose luminosity and simplicity – an abstract texture, without any type of pattern or standout visual – contrasts with the exuberance noted on the outside, allowing to accommodate the family’s special collection pieces.

ECOLOGICAL PRINCIPLES OF CONSTRUCTION

The house also adopted a set of ecological principles in its construction, such as:
Reduction in resource consumption through the adopted building system, which includes a structure integrally made in sustainable wood, assembled in situ;
A ventilated facade system that benefits from a first layer finished with projected cork (simultaneously enhancing aesthetics, durability and thermal comfort);
Exhaustive use of natural materials, such as hemp and cork, at all levels of construction;
Reduced and controlled use of energy, possible by the exploration of passive systems and decentralized ventilation systems with heat recovery, allowing maximum comfort without the need to rely on air conditioning or any other systems with greater consumption rate;
Selection of non-toxic materials, non-contaminating or susceptible to the release of chemicals (either in the process of construction itself or during the usable life of the material/finishing/element) which includes options for natural paints and absence of toxic varnishes;

Preference over options obtained from an ecological and sustainable process;
Principle of durability and low maintenance, favoring solutions in which Architecture and Construction work in symbiosis and guarantee the longevity and quality of the solutions.

ESTRATÉGIA DE PROJETO
Integrada no Parque nacional de Sintra-Cascais, a casa localiza-se junto à Praia Grande na localidade de Rodízio, freguesia de Colares.
O projeto parte da vontade de construir o espaço (da casa) a partir do vazio deixado entre pinheiros, estratégia que se sustenta na ideia de fusão/aliança entre o edificado e o espaço natural.
O ponto de partida – o conjunto de pinheiros existentes – originou uma composição volumétrica de distintos volumes aos quais correspondem os diferentes usos. A sua disposição no terreno atende à orientação solar, à topografia assim como à posição das árvores a manter estabelecendo, paralelamente, relações visuais com a Serra de Sintra situada a nascente.
Os volumes organizam-se estrategicamente (ainda) em torno de uma clareira central, (de acordo com os vazios existentes entre os pinheiros), que recebe o plano de água e é marcado por ela, assim originando um espaço de natureza agregadora e potenciadora da vivência da família no exterior para onde convergem as coberturas inclinadas dos diferentes volumes que compõem a casa.
A necessidade de libertar/soltar os volumes do chão – dada a consistência porosa e permeável do terreno – veio contribuir, complementarmente, para a leitura orgânica do conjunto edificado, cuja suspensão dos corpos é reforçada pela densa vegetação de sombra que se desenvolve sob os mesmos.
Do ponto de vista paisagístico o desafio concentrou-se então na manutenção do pinhal existente tendo em vista a sua valorização enquanto conjunto que articula jardim utilizável e cenário para o interior da casa.

PROGRAMA
Do ponto de vista programático, a casa dispõe de uma área de estacionamento, uma zona de serviços onde se localizam a lavandaria, despensas, cozinha e instalação sanitária social, uma área social que compreende num espaço único – a sala de estar, espaço de refeições e sala de piano – e, finalmente, três quartos, um deles de uso flexível (escritório), à parte das áreas técnicas que se localizam sob a sala aproveitando o desnível do terreno

OPÇÕES MATERIAIS
A casa deveria incorporar materiais que assegurarem um aspeto cru e em bruto alinhados com a organicidade do projeto sem deixar, porém, de se distinguir como uma massa construída em diálogo com o contexto.
Os volumes são revestidos exteriormente por chapas metálicas caneladas com cortiça projetada, cuja textura, molde e tonalidade proporcionam uma aparência natural e irregular (alinhada com a presença dos pinheiros), facilitando o escoamento das águas na direção do solo e cuja composição assegura um bom isolamento acústico.
Em torno da clareira abrem-se planos de vidro a partir dos quais é estabelecido o contacto visual com o exterior. Sobre as superfícies envidraçadas que conformam as passarelas de distribuição, vão sendo colocadas contínuas portadas em ripas de madeira, as quais propiciam uma temperatura cálida e uma atmosfera de conforto, visível desde o interior, filtrando paralelamente a intensa exposição solar a sul.
Também no interior é introduzida a madeira, presente nos vãos e nos tetos dos espaços. Na grande sala – espaço primordial da casa –, é exponenciada a sua presença pela criação de um teto composto por caixotões que, além de garantirem a qualidade acústica do espaço, promovem um ambiente particular.
Todos os pavimentos e paredes interiores são acabados em microcimento de cor cinza clara, cuja luminosidade e simplicidade – textura abstrata, sem padrão – contrastam com a exuberância patente no exterior, permitindo acolher as peças de coleção da família.

PRINCÍPIOS ECOLÓGICOS DA CONSTRUÇÃO
A construção da casa adotou ainda um conjunto de princípios ecológicos na sua construção tais como: Redução do consumo de recursos por via do sistema construtivo adotado, que contempla uma estrutura integral em madeira sustentável montada in situ;
um sistema de fachada ventilada que beneficia de uma primeira pele acabada com cortiça projetada (potenciando simultaneamente as vertentes de estética, durabilidade e conforto térmico);
utilização exaustiva de materiais naturais, como o cânhamo e a cortiça, em todos os níveis da construção;

reduzida utilização de energia garantida através da exploração de sistemas passivos e de sistemas de ventilação descentralizada com recuperação de calor, possibilitando máximo conforto sem recurso a Ar Condicionado ou outros sistemas de maior consumo e desgaste;
seleção de materiais não tóxicos, não contaminantes ou suscetíveis de libertação de químicos (seja no processo de aplicação em obra ou no decurso da vida útil do material), que inclui opções sobre tintas naturais;
ausência de vernizes tóxicos; prevalência sobre opções obtidas em processo ecológico e sustentável; princípio da durabilidade e da baixa manutenção, privilegiando soluções em que Arquitetura e Construção funcionam em simbiose e garantem a longevidade e qualidade das soluções.
