Collaborating with Gensler Architect, our goals are to create an efficient layout and playful environment that can enhance learning for children in a heritage building in downtown Toronto.

The daycare consists of different age groups. With careful study of the existing site condition, we were able to prepare flexible and convertible classrooms that could accommodate toddler, preschool or family group depending on children admittance. The layout of each classroom is very clean without any blind spots for teachers, which they can focus on taking care of each child’s needs.

Both existing mechanical and plumbing infrastructures have been carefully modified to fit the use for a daycare, while we also develop multiple preservation strategies to maintain the historical value of the building.

The outdoor playground is a key feature of the daycare. Throughout the outdoor space, we aimed to activate and engage maximum of kids’ five sensors – Sight, Touch, Hear, Smell and Taste. Each zone becomes a development strategy for teachers, and interactive fun for children. Similar to the interior design, the layout and fence design were also carefully studied and prepared to meet with all heritage and security requirements.
