HAIR SALON | Anna Underowicz
for studio Chmielewski Katowice / Poland / 2022
A project made for a new hairdresser for Studio Chmielewski. The client requested for his new location within his brief for seven cutting-stations, three washing-stations, a hair dye mixing station, a reception and waiting room, plus a social area.
The project can be seen as a three-dimensional painting which occupied the room with a slanted ceiling, which at its highest point reached a height of 4,5 meters.
The first step was to divide this unused height by painting the ceiling and the upper part of the room in a black-satin paint; creating a feeling of intimacy and introducing a pleasant human-scale. The sharp division in section determined the height of the black-coated steel structure as well as in defining the cutting- and washing areas. The steel structure incorporated various elements such as lights, audio installation, and various cable work. The custom-made steel components were designed, in collaboration with a local workshop, to provide a light and transparent set of sculptural elements, which would provide for a clear and friendly space for its users. A set of plants collaborate with the wooden lamellas
Wooden vertical lamellas were used to balance out the black-paint to introduce a warm accent within the interior, as well as to highlight the washing stations and the hair dye mixing station. The cutting stations were surrounded by light-grey painted walls matching the tone of the floor, providing a neutral background for the visual quality of the hair-dying process.
Plants were used to blend with the wooden lamellas, as well as to provide a privacy screen for the elevated washing-stations.
