Sqotek shelter | mainstudio

Commissioned by the Wolastoqiyik Wahsipekuk First Nation, this wooden pavilion was designed to host storytelling and legend-making wolastoqey activities. The project unfolds around the fire, a significant element for the community. A fireplace is placed in the center of a circular bench seat, a sacred shape for the First Nation. The shelter thus allows the experience of an encounter where the occupants position themselves in a circular fashion, a spatial organization without hierarchy that establishes equality, a value transmitted by the ancestors of the community. Part of the circle can be seen from the outside as you approach the building by the presence of curved walls that invite you to enter from the east side. The integration of the circular shape in the layout of the project thus makes it possible to orient the interior path according to the wolastoqey tradition which requires that one enters and leaves any circular gathering on the east side while moving in the direction of the sun’s course.

Sqotek refers to “the place of fire” (hence the name Squatec in Témiscouata where archaeological sites have led to the discovery of several hearths used by the community’s ancestors).

This collaboration with the Wolastoqiyik Wahsipekuk First Nation was an opportunity to lay the foundation for a broader reflection on the essence of the community’s values. This is how Robert Lavoie recently participated in the development of the Wolastoqiyik Wahsipekuk First Nation’s architectural and landscape identity charter.

Commandé par la Première Nation Wolastoqiyik Wahsipekuk, ce pavillon de bois a été conçu pour accueillir des activités de transmission de contes et de légendes wolastoqey. Le projet se déploie autour du feu, élément significatif pour la communauté. Un foyer prend place au centre d’une banquette en forme cercle, forme sacrée pour la Première Nation. L’abri permet ainsi l’expérience d’une rencontre où les occupants se positionnent de façon circulaire, une organisation spatiale sans hiérarchie qui établit l’égalité, une valeur transmise par les ancêtres de la communauté. Une partie du cercle se devine de l’extérieur à l’approche du bâtiment par la présence de murs courbes qui invitent à l’entrée du côté est. L’intégration de la forme circulaire dans l’aménagement du projet permet donc d’orienter le parcours intérieur selon la tradition wolastoqey qui veut que l’on entre et que l’on sorte de tout rassemblement circulaire du côté est tout en y circulant dans le sens de la course du soleil.

Sqotek fait référence à ‘‘l’endroit du feu’’ (d’où le nom de Squatec dans le Témiscouata où des chantiers archéologiques ont permis la découverte de plusieurs foyers utilisés par les ancêtres de la communauté).

Cette collaboration avec la Première Nation Wolastoqiyik Wahsipekuk fût l’occasion de jeter les bases d’une réflexion plus large sur l’essence des valeurs de la communauté. C’est ainsi que Robert Lavoie a récemment participé au mandat de l’élaboration de la charte architecturale et paysagère identitaire de la Première Nation Wolastoqiyik Wahsipekuk.
