Seco Tools is a company based in Fagersta, Sweden, and is present in more than 75 countries. Seco develops and supplies technologies, processes and services for milling, stationary tools, holemaking and tooling systems.
As the base for Seco Tools México, was selected Ramos Arizpe, a municipality with strong industrial vocation located between Saltillo, Coahuila, and Monterrey, Nuevo León, in northern México. Design input level for this facility is high, considering the hierarchy of production configuration, corresponding to a head office with tech centre and production unit: a regional headquarters with a large number of staff, with a clear visual and physical link between the offices and tech centre. The tech centre is for customer cooperation and interaction with cutting tool specialists.
Seco’s organizational philosophy calls for a clear connection between works spaces, creating an open and collaborative work environment. The entrance and reception area is the centre of all communications, the link between interior spaces. Not only there is a clear link between the entrance hall and office area, meeting rooms, exhibition and oasis, but also with the tech centre and production area. All spaces and people are equally important to Seco operations, so one of the design priorities was to avoid contrast or hierarchization between production and office areas.
The offices take advantage of the North orientation, so as to provide natural light to main working areas, while avoiding the high impact of solar incidence, and providing visual connection to the gardens of the industrial park. The tech centre and administrative offices open up to these views to the North, as well as to the open plan zone, which includes collaborative work areas. IT site, maintenance and special tool work spaces all connect physically and visually to the main production area, to the South.
At the east of the office building is located the oasis, or mainrefreshment facility with restaurant and recreation spaces, as well as the zones with less openness: medical centre, breastfeeding room, kitchen, service bar, restrooms, bathrooms and lockers.
While being an industrial facility, Seco Tools aims for a design of their spaces taking into account efficiency, practicality and elegance. Selected materials are metal and glass in exteriors, wood and textiles in interiors, making use of both neutral colors and contrasting by using the primary colors in the institutional chromatic palette.
The international leadership of Seco Tools generated a great work environment for the design team, by understanding that the buildings and environments influence in work organization, help attract and retain employees and can represent strong communicators of the Seco brand.
