Former rye barn

The renovation of the former rye barn was carried out as part of the project for the re-functioning of the Alpisella alpine hamlet, aimed at creating an innovative accommodation facility named Selucente. The hamlet is located at an altitude of 1,000 metres in the Ligurian Alps, on the border between Liguria and Piedmont.

The old barn, initially in an advanced state of disrepair, was made of stone. The single interior room was topped with a wooden roof with a rye straw covering, replaced a few decades ago with metal sheets that have now rusted.

The renovation work led to the replacement of the old roofing, structural consolidation of the masonry, and the construction of a new internal mezzanine to house the sleeping area. The structure of the new roof was made of wood and is topped with wood fibre insulation enclosed by a double planking; the external covering is made of corten steel sheets.

The achievement of the minimum internal height was made possible by constructing two new full-height dormer windows overlooking the Upper Tanaro Valley to the south and the forest to the north.

The new interior flooring was made of polished concrete. The interior walls were made with 6/8 cm of lime and hempen plaster (CalceCanapa).

The interior walls in the bathroom are made of marmorino, those in the kitchen of coloured earthenware.

To keep the exterior appearance as consistent as possible with the existing one, it was decided not to intervene on the exterior walls and to leave the old lime plaster partially detached.

Il recupero dell'ex fienile della Segale è stato realizzato nell'ambito del progetto di rifunzionalizzazione della borgata Alpina Alpisella, finalizzato alla creazione di una struttura ricettiva innovativa di nome Selucente. La borgata si trova a 1000 metri di quota sulle Alpi Liguri, al confine tra Liguria e Piemonte.

Il vecchio fienile, inizialmente in avanzato stato di abbandono, era realizzato in pietra. L'ambiente unico interno era sormontato da una copertura in legno con manto in paglia di segale, sostituita da alcuni decenni con lamiere metalliche ondulate ormai arrugginite.

I lavori di recupero hanno portato alla sostituzione della vecchia copertura (tetto), al consolidamento strutturale delle murature e alla realizzazione di un nuovo soppalco interno che ospita la zona notte. La struttura della nuova copertura è stata realizzata in legno ed è sormontata da una coibentazione in fibra di legno racchiusa da un doppio tavolato, il manto esterno è in lamiere grecate di acciaio corten.

Il raggiungimento delle altezze minime interne è stato possibile grazie alla realizzazione di due nuovi abbaini a tutta altezza che dal piano soppalco aprono la vista sull'Alta Valle Tanaro Sud e sul bosco a nord.

La nuova pavimentazione interna è stata realizzata con un battuto di cemento levigato. Le pareti interne sono state realizzate con 6/8 cm di termo intonaco CalceCanapa grezzo.

Le pareti interne del bagno sono realizzate in marmorino, quelle della cucina in cocciopesto colorato.

Per mantenere l'aspetto esteriore quanto più possibile coerente con l'esistente si è deciso di non intervenire sulle pareti esterne e di lasciare il vecchio intonaco a calce in parte distaccato.
