La Radieuse | naturehumaine [architecture+design]

Located in the heart of the Plateau Mont-Royal, near Sir Wilfred-Laurier Park, the project consists in the expansion and of the complete renovation of the semi-detached single-family house. 

The project translates the intention of the family to create a real « family cocoon », where the functional and hearty space is open to the outside, giving rise to a diffuse natural light in all the common rooms.

Thus, the ambition of the project is to bring conviviality, warmth, light but also a playful touch to this young family house.

In this way, the brick added to the double-height space allows to make the link between the two main rooms of the house, the dining room and the den up above, while marking the importance of the latter; places where the family gathers. 

A central staircase with white painted steel stringers and maple steps connects all 3 floors together. Coupled with the double-height and its glazed openings on the different rooms of the house, it becomes a truly playful and dynamic space for the family.

Indeed, the house is organized on three distinct levels; the ground floor with the living spaces, the second floor level for the children as well as the mezzanine, which constitutes the vertical extension of the house, reserved for the parents.

On the garden side, the brightly yellow painted facade visible from the green alley is at the image of the family: dynamic and colourful. Moreover, the interior of the house is punctuated with touches of this same tonality. Also, the overhang of the second level dramatizes the architectural and formal expression of the back facade. The latter allows, on the one hand, to protect the terrace and on the other to create a depth through a play of offsets between the adjoining facades not negligible for the privacy of its residents.

Situé au cœur du Plateau Mont-Royal, à proximité du parc Sir Wilfried-Laurier, le projet consiste en l’agrandissement et la rénovation complète d’une maison mitoyenne unifamiliale.

Le projet traduit la volonté de la famille de se créer un véritable « cocon familial », où l’espace fonctionnel et chaleureux est ouvert sur l’extérieur, donnant lieu à une lumière naturelle diffuse dans toutes les pièces vies.

Ainsi, l’ambition du projet est d’apporter convivialité, chaleur, lumière mais aussi une touche ludique au sein de la maison de la fratrie.

De cette manière, la brique sur le mur intérieur s’ajoutant à la double-hauteur permet de faire le lien entre les deux pièces principales de la maison, la salle à manger ainsi que la salle familiale à l’étage, tout en marquant l’importance de ces dernières ; lieux où l’on se retrouve en famille.

La circulation entre les étages se fait par un escalier central avec des limons en acier peint blanc et des marches en érable. Couplé à la double-hauteur et ses ouvertures intérieures, l’escalier prend de l’ampleur et fait l’objet d’un véritable espace ludique et dynamique pour la famille.

En effet, la maison s’organise sur trois niveaux distincts ; le rez-de-chaussée ou l’espace commun, l’étage des enfants puis la mezzanine constituant l’extension verticale de la maison, elle réservée aux parents.

A l’arrière-côté jardin, la façade de couleur jaune visible depuis la ruelle verte, est à l’image de la famille : dynamique et rayonnante. D’ailleurs, l’intérieur de la maison est ponctué de touches de ce même jaune.

L’expression architecturale et formelle de la façade se traduit par la projection du deuxième niveau rythmé par une série de lames verticales. Ce dernier permet, d’une part, un débord pour se protéger au niveau de la terrasse et d’autre part de créer un relief, un jeu de décalage entre les façades mitoyennes, indispensable pour l’intimité de ses résidents.
