Refurbishment of a 80 sqm ground floor flat in central Sofia, Bulgaria.

Basic design brief called for a comfortable and atmospheric living space for a couple of professionals in their 50s.

Present was also the intension to keep elements of the character of the Arts and Crafts building designed by an Austrian architect in the 1920s for the workers of a cooperative bank. High ceilings, original arched doorways and structural elements, bay windows to South and the symmetrical plan of the flat provided frame for the project. Kitchen and bathroom color palettes and skirting boards detail borrow from early 20th century design.

The flat is getting limited hours of sunlight during the day due to the proximity of adjacent multi storey buildings. Full height mirrored doors to all built-in storage and wardrobes help distributing natural light thru the spaces and also offer unexpected visual lines between the areas.

Contemporary furniture pieces and paintings and the industrial feel of the metal custom designed books shelving and kitchen complete the eclectic feel of the place.
