La Cache | naturehumaine [architecture+design]

The project consists in the transformation of a duplex on Garnier Street into a cottage with a rental studio in the basement. Located in the heart of the Petite-Patrie district, the existing duplex is part of a series of two-storey dwellings with identical facades located on narrow and deep property.

The genesis of the project was developed around a specific request from the clients: To have a winter living room like an urban chalet, in the heart of their home; a modern day cabin suspended in the image of a watchtower ( La Cache ).

Translated by a rectangular volume dressed with wood, the watchtower is visually connected to the different spaces of the house through its materiality. “La Cache” is thus nested in the existing volumetry of the house. Suspended in the air, it cantilevers over the ground floor terrace. This feeling of imbrication is accentuated by the extension of the wood siding between the interior and the exterior.

Featuring a fireplace, “La Cache” is connected by a thick wooden built-in cabinet, opening into the bathroom. Covered with a bluish ceramic, this open bathroom offers views of the fireplace as well as the garden.

The circulation between the floors is established by a white painted steel staircase with openwork oak steps. This one evolves in the heart of a double height, placed between the entrance of the house and the watchtower. This generous double height welcomes at its top a large skylight illuminating the living spaces on the ground floor. The staircase then dialogues with the wooden volume by a footbridge overhanging a part of the kitchen.

On the outside, the rear façade opens up with a generous window. Contained by its brick walls, it contemplates the garden from the different floors.

Le projet consiste en la transformation d’un duplex de la rue Garnier en un cottage doté d’un studio locatif au sous-sol. Situé au cœur du quartier de la Petite-Patrie, le duplex existant fait partie d’une série d’habitations à deux étages, aux façades identiques implantées sur d’étroites et longues parcelles de terrain.

La genèse du projet se développa autour d’une demande spécifique des clients : Avoir un salon d’hiver tel un chalet urbain, au cœur de leur habitation; une cabane des temps modernes suspendue à l’image d’une cache.

Traduite par un volume rectangulaire recouvert de bois, la Cache est visuellement connectée aux différents espaces de la maison par sa matérialité. Celui-ci est imbriqué dans la volumétrie existante de la maison. Suspendu dans les airs, il se projette en porte-à-faux au-dessus de la terrasse au rez-de-chaussée. Ce sentiment d’imbrication est accentué par le prolongement du revêtement de bois entre l’intérieur et l’extérieur. 

Doté d’un foyer, ce volume en bois est connecté par un large meuble intégré lui aussi en bois, s’ouvrant sur la salle de bain. Revêtue d’une céramique bleutée, cette salle de bain ouverte offre des vues sur ce foyer ainsi que sur le jardin. 

La circulation entre les étages s’établie par un escalier en acier peint blanc aux marches ajourées en chêne. Celui-ci évolue au cœur d’une double hauteur placée entre l’entrée de l’habitation et la Cache. Cette généreuse double hauteur accueille en son sommet un large puits de lumière éclairant les espaces de vie au rez-de-chaussée. L’escalier dialogue alors avec le volume en bois par une passerelle surplombant une partie de la cuisine. 

 À l’extérieur, la façade arrière s’ouvre à l’aide d’une fenestration généreuse. Contenue par ses murs de briques, elle contemple le jardin depuis les différents étages.
